Favorite Detoxifiers?
    #16943895 -

Whats your favorite & most effective ways of detoxing?

From what ive come across fasting is by far the most powerful of them all, as its not really doing something, your not adding stuff to your body that it needs to work to assimilate/eliminate, your simply letting your body detoxify & heal itself by taking food away from it

When it comes to doing things to actively assist detox i've found that yoga & cardio exercise with lots of sweating to be great, especially if done outdoors in a large forest practicing deep breathing, i feel this helps the lungs so much & the lungs are one of our most powerful detoxifying organs so i've heard

Speaking of detoxifying organs i've only recently getting into colon cleansing, which i prefer to be done internally by drinking psyllium husks in water

When it comes to foods, i find green vegetables like brocoli, kale, watercress feel like the most detoxifying foods i've eaten... i especially like cavalo nero, a dark almost black type of kale which i just found today back in my local shop, i love it when it comes back into season, when it comes to fruit i love blackberries/blackcurrants, they feel very cleansing, and of course lots of water!

Oh, and of course how could i forget  mushrooms! from the edible inactives through to the psychoactive, very detoxifying :mushroom2:

Any tips, suggestions, foods, exercises, anything that you directly experience as detoxifying are appreciated

I have actually just bought a juicer which is arriving tomorrow, i've never even tried fresh juices before so looking forward to trying it out, my first will definitley be kale juice after fasting all day :drooling:

Cheers!

i had alot of success with a whole fruit/asparagus juice detox diet earlier this summer. i'll be repeating this again soon and for the rest of my life.

i love juicing  vegetable juicing especially - fresh juice is so much better (and different) than the store-bought stuff. gives me such a rush of energy after i drink some

as for detox tips, i've heard really good things about a detox program called the colorado cleanse: http://lifespa.com/colorado-cleanse/ dunno much about it, but it was highly recommended by someone who practices tibetan medicine - i think it's kinda pricey though but might be worth it :sun:

i like ayurvedic mono-diet cleansing.

http://community.yogajournal.com/_ayurvedic-cleansing-diet/blog/716532/25925.html

i usually also eat lots of apples and steamed greens/veggies when im cleansing like this.  feels really great, and is very detoxifying, but not so harsh on your system as fasting or juicing.

i did this for about 8 days last year around this time, and fasted completely on the 9th day.  it's about time for me to do it again.

i would consider a juice or some other kind of cleanse/detox at some point in the future if I am able to take time off of work at just meditate/do yoga the whole time.  otherwise there's no way i would be able to perform my job.

another detox i've done that had a really profound affect was giving up ALL sugar for approximately 3 weeks including no bread, no fruit, no booze, no NOTHING with sugar in it.

changed my life!!!!

Thanks for the replies, the colorado cleanse looks good, mainly because they prepare for the fast by cleaning out first, id imagine a prolonged fast would progress better if you already have a clean digestive system, im defintiely going to use lot of psyllium husk, followed by veggie juice before i do a 7 day water fast so my body can focus on things other than my digestive systems toxins during the fast, i want to get those mucus rope things out of me!

Asparagus could be an interesting juice, ill have to try it

I got myself a steamer last weekend & its pretty much all im using for cooked foods now, definitely the way to go, convenient aswell as it times all my food to finish cooking at the same time, im sure ill still have some oven roasted veggies every now & then though as they taste so damn good

I currently fast for 20 hours daily, basically just have one meal in the evening everyday, sometimes a small meal sometimes a large meal & i find i usually have energy at work/during the day, at worst i get small dips in energy that pass quickly. When i think of doing a total fast i do think id like time off work, but i reckon i could do it if i had to... ive given up sugar for 5 days a week & definitely feel better for it, trying to keep it to berries on the weekend, but i do like a bit of sugary chocolate now & then

whats your favorite juices? im really looking forward to trying it out man
also do you use the left over pulp/fibre for anything?

i just compost my left over pulp - but i've heard it can be used for like muffins and stuff  but i've heard the majority of the nutrients come out in the juice, so i'm not really that excited by the pulp (though it's high in fibre of course)

as for favourite juices - i love doing just garden cocktail type ones - tomato, carrots, celery, red pepper, quarter lemon with skin, etc - tastes way better than store bought garden cocktails and gives me a massive rush of energy

as for healthier juices, dark green leafy greens are the best, though a lot of them are really bitter so you probably want to mix them with something sweet like carrots, apples, etc... if you want a cool super healthy green with a strong spicy kick, look into mustard greens. but be careful, it's strong stuff

swiss chard is a great one too to add to juices

here's two pics from a recent juicing session

Reading the parasite thread made me think a little bit... Here's a parasite detox, it's called Humaworm. You can get it ready made by the Humaworm folks if you're in the US.

Formula (https://humaworm.com/formula.html)
Black Walnut 200mg
Wormwood 100mg
Cloves 100mg
Thyme 100mg
Garlic 200mg
Fennel 100mg
Cayenne 100mg
Ginger 100mg
Gentian 100mg
Hyssop 100mg
Milk Thistle 100mg
Marshmallow root 100mg
Pau D' Arco 200mg
Burdock 100mg
Elecampane 100mg
Fenugreek 100mg
Licorice 100mg
Barberry 200mg
Cascara Sagrada 25mg
Senna 25mg
Sage 100mg
Psyllium 200mg
Yellow Dock 100mg
Cramp Bark 100mg
Peppermint 200mg

According to their site, over 90% of people in America have parasites. I think a parasite detox would probably be the first thing to do, then a heavy metal detox, etc. Personally I feel great just giving up all refined/processed foods and grains also; Paleo is the way to go. Not 'fine, a bit okay' but GREAT, I wake up with a massive euphoric burst every day.

Thanks for the recommendations dude, lemon with the skin should be interesting & ill look out for the mustard greens/swiss chard, my juicer got delayed & should be with me tomorrow, really looking forward to using it, i may start with a simple carrot juice rather than the pure kale

Im going for a long walk on saturday & know i wont feel like eating breakfast & will probably miss lunch aswell, but ill make sure to take a flask of juice along with me to keep me going, i hear its good for 24-48 hours after juicing

yeah pure kale might be a little bitter

and i've heard that the juice oxidizes pretty quickly after juicing, so i like to chug mine right away within a few minutes. but i think there'd still be benefit to having it later in a flask too.

oh another cool thing to throw in the juice is a jalapeno pepper, makes for quite a spicy vegetable juice

oh and back to the topic - another detox supplement that i hear is good (especially for heavy metals) is chlorella, which is a strain of algae

here's an article on it for detox usage: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/02/01/is-this-one-of-natures-most-powerful-detoxification-tools.aspx

oh hell yes, i forgot about juicing fresh peppers/chillies, i love chillies

i went through a stage of having barley grass/spirulina mixed into smoothies but didn't keep it up as i don't really drink smoothies much anymore, i may try again as i have them in my cupboard & also bring chlorella into the mix at some point, might aswell mix them with fresh juice to mask the taste

i remember when i first got them in the mail i mixed a teaspoon of each into a small glass of water, and i could feel it hit me, it was amazing, it convinced me that eventually humans evolve onto a totally green diet

yeah i have some greens+ (it's a powdered blend of a whole bunch of greens like wheat grass and spirulina) that i mix in with sweet juices (fruit or carrot-based) which really masks the taste

Cool, looks like good stuff although its quite expensive, i think i prefer to have the separate powders & work with them that way, just so for instance if i wanted more protein i can add more spirulina etc... but id take that greens+ over a vitamin pill anyday, its good to go through the ingredient list & i can mix something similar

I may get some of their veggie caps to take on holiday with me as im not going to lug around lots of tubs of strange looking powder through customs, the resveratrol & berry suppliments they do look pretty good too, i love grapes & berries!
The greens+ does look like one of the best pre made mixes ive seen...

Thanks for the input dude, i always feel enthusiastic about reading your posts when i see you've replied

yeah greens+ is quite expensive, so i only buy it when it's on sale - once i got it for 50% off cause it was going to expire in a few months. but i don't use it every day now like i used to, just when i get the urge to. i agree though about buying things separately being better - more flexibility and usually a lot cheaper.

and i always enjoy your posts too (especially in s&m :sun:)

Just had my first taste of juice & it is very nice!

I had one big carrot, one leaf of kale plus some coriander & ginger, the only downside is i got such a small amount, it was like one sip, and the pulp that came out was still quite moist, throwing away the pulp felt like a bit of a waste when all i did was squeeze a lil bit of juice out of it, i got maybe just over half the juice im guessing, i assumed the pulp would come out bone dry

It was really nice, but i do think its quite inefficient & expensive, ill do it once or twice a week at most, good thing is the juicer i got can be used as a mincer for herbs/garlic or fruit sorbets aswell so i can still use it often

hmm the pulp in mine usually comes out pretty dry, especially for carrots. the pulp from tomatoes is usually moist, but for most things it's pretty dry. i agree that it's expensive though, so i only juice every few days when i get the urge

leafy greens don't give a lot of juice ime, but the juice they give is pretty potent. carrots usually give me a good amount of juice tho :sun:

if you look at the pics i posted, all those veggies gave me about 700mL of juice, which is quite a lot. peppers, celery, cucumbers especially all give a good amount of juice. as do apples

also, even if you don't get a lot of juice out of it - it's really condensed with nutrients (or should be) and since there's no fibre, your body absorbs it all very very quickly (as it doesn't have to break things down) - so it's like a shot of nutrients

what kind of juicer is yours? in that picture looks about 3x the size of mine!
it looks like one of those centrifugal ones which i think are better than what i went for as mines a single auger 'l'equip omni' in the manual it does say that carrot pulp can come out moist & to mix it with highly fibred veggies to get all the juice out

im sure i'll get better at using it with time aswell, i definitely got a nice rush from the sip that i got, tomorrow morning i may have a proper go

oh yeah, im going to freeze the pulp & add it to sauces/soups so i don't waste anything

Re: Favorite Detoxifiers? [Re: Chronic7]
    #16965964 -

yeah mine's a centrifugal - the single auger is really good for leafy greens and such i hear, i plan on getting one eventually when i have some money. mine's a 'jack lalanne's power juicer elite' lol  i think centrifugal is better for juicy fruits and veggies whereas single auger is better for dense fibrous stuff. the downside with centrifugal though is that there's more oxidation of the juice since the blade spins so fast, so some of the nutrients get destroyed

this talk of juicing made me fire up a big mug full of tomato, celery, carrot, red pepper, and a thai chili juice. the thai chili makes it surprisingly spicy
