It is very expensive and heavily promoted as miracle supplements. Its a good sources of chlorophyll, but there is little or no research supporting the claims made about the algae.
If you must have your algae, chlorella is a much better choice.

Actually, there is quite a large body of research supporting many of the claims about Spirulina. I'll post links tomorrow.
To the OP: I've used Spirulina for years, and it seems to have a direct positive effect on my energy level and my mood. My rats love it, too.

Question: I have been looking at this stuff, and it seems to be taken more as a supplement instead of a food. Is there any possible "tasty" way to prepare it or do you just stir it in water and gag it down like wheat grass?

I take in either in fresh veggie juice or sweet fruit juice. It's also great in bars--Spirulina Bee Bars are yummy!

By itself the stuff is pretty yucky. It tastes only a little better than ayahuasca, which is probably the worst tasting known "food" or beverage. List the benefits that you believe this has had for you. Why would the nutrients it contains not be found in more conventional (I mean good tasting) foods? Most of the web resources contain so much hype jargon (like the wheat grass claims) that the claims made for it come off sort of flaky. I understand that it has chlorophyll and protein, but so do many other foods. Wikipedia spoke highly of it, but there was nothing there that made it seem like an essential food, and they did link it to neurodegenerative disease, though the link is tenuous.

I take both chlorella and spirulina, but only because I absolutely hate eating green leafy veggies. They are a nice substitute.

Yeah... didn't affect it at all from what I can tell. Although it's not like I took the Spirulina in hopes that it would affect my trips. I just happened to be taking it daily, and then some of those days I ate mushrooms too.

Simple technique: Try blending your leafy greens in combination with a high water content fruit base such as watermelon or pineapple and add whatever else you like to make it sweeter. Finalize the mix with two tablespoons of spirulina and/or chlorella. Have this jungle green smoothie once a day for breakfast. Your body will love you for it!
