Need help concerning using cake to colonize straw
    #1695280 -

OK so my friend bought 4 myco bags. They were the straw/grass kind. he didn't know that it's rough to get mycellium growing in straw, and it's best used for bulk spawn. well, one bag did manage to colonize, amazingly.

now, the question is, how can he use the colonized cake to colonize the other bags? Should he just open the other 3 bags, drop some crumbled colonized cake in there, seal it back up, and mix them up and wait, or, what other (possibly better) options would he have?

well, you could do that, but you'd have a high rate of contamination unless you have superb sterile technique, or a flowhood or something.

my suggestion would be to pasteurise (not sterilise) some more straw +/- poo, and spawn that. but you should get a second opinion.

Contams are always an issue if you're working with uncolonized substrate in contact with the air in your working room. So keep your working place clean, work swiftly, and maybe use an alcohol burner which you work nearby. If you don't expose the substrate too long to the environment and your working environment is reasonably clean (turn off any fans and airconditioning systems when you're going to work on this stuff, also close doors and windows to stop all airflows), contaminations are unlikely.
