satellite dish question
    #16887871 -

So next month I am going with my uncle up to Oregon for a week in his big rig I had the Idea of bringing a 10 inch TV with my Directv receiver and his old Directv satellite dish.
My question is would it work if I hooked up my receiver to his old dish and get a signal?

No sir. You've got to get a receiver built for vehicles.

I am not talking about using it while he is driving just when we are stopped.

You likely won't be able to get the ODU to reconnect to the satellite, or find the proper polarization and tilt angle. Also, you may be in an area where the conus changes as well.

So, chances are, no.

Don't the boxes need to be hooked up to a telephone line to work these days. I know Dish network does for it's keys.

As far as aiming it at a satellite it's pretty easy.
You can find the locations online.
You will need a Satellite Finder, a cheap analog $10 unit will work fine.
A compass, or if you don't have one I have even used google maps/earth to mark my position and aim at the satallite then using terrestrial markers, trees, mountains, etc.. to point in the right direction. You just need a solid mount for the dish.
All you need is the azimuth, skew and elevation. There are programs online that can find it out for you by zip code.

Looks like they all use special receivers for mobile viewing.

I miss the old free satellite days.

Not so. I have Dish Network. No phone line or ethernet is hooked to it.

I stand corrected. Was getting my FTA receivers and a Dish box with a card mixed up.

Depends on the dish. Your receiver can accommodate any of the dishes, but the channel line up will change. If he has a round dish with a single LNB you will only get SD channels. If he has an oval dish with 3 or more LNBs you will pick up all north American HD channels available in that area.

Just make sure to put his zip code in when you do the sat settings in the menu. It will spit out numbers to adjust the dish's tilt, elevation and azimuth. Chances are its already aimed right if he has or had directv working in the last decade.

Crap I forgot that the actual boxes have a sat signal strength meter with a tone. You really don't need a sat finder.
