Question about mushroom farms
    #16725808 -

I have many among me locally, does anyone know if mushroom farms are willing to sell prints or cultures? I wanna grow a few edibles for hobby. I know of Aloha and FP as well as others but i didn't know if local farms would do business selling cultures or prints. Has anyone ever had bought any prints or cultures from local mushroom farms in their area?

Go ask them! If not, buy some fresh specimens while you're there and take them home to clone or print yourself. I got some portobellos from a nearby mushroom farm and made a print.

your best bet for spores of edibles is going to be trading with other members.  keep in mind that the reason we tend to propagate edibles clonally is because there are certain strains that are more productive.  If you start an edible from multispore slurry, you dont really know what you have genetically and it might take some work to isolate the most productive genetic colonies to perform the way you want.  That said, most oyster species can be sucessfully grow from multispore.  Cubes are mostly grown from multispore for one reason;  the spores are legal to buy and sell

1. Get Agar and make plates
2. Go to grocery store and get fresh mushroom
3. Place sample on agar
4. Clean agar specimen if needed
5. Transfer to jars and continue cultivating

IMO sounds like a lot of contam trouble.  why not just:

make the plates
get the mushroom
flame a scalpel FLAME THE SHIT OUT OF IT!
cut the shroom in half and take a cut a small piece of tissue
drop on agar
repeat about 4 times.

gonna have a lot less contam with a clone than with putting a fresh mushroom cap onto agar plate

However, if you were interested in doing some BREEDING and trying to create some new strain.  or in preserving the species for a long long time, i could see making some prints and there a lotsa great teks for making prints on foil etc

hey slayer,
i reread your post and now i realize you were suggesting the same exact thing i was.  when you said place a sample on the plate you were also talking about a clonal sample.  in my mind i pictured you making a spore print on the agar plate which seemed pretty strange.  basically, we are suggesting the same thing

I thought results of cloning a mushroom from the store were EHHH? So so, since most are at the point of senescence by the time they reach the shelves. Are the mushrooms at farms typically from younger gene lines? I know I COULD do that, but I kinda wanted to tour a farm when I went out there and figured I'd get a culture if the local farms do that sorta thing. I will definitely trade for a print and isolate myself though if they can't provide a culture.

most commercial growers are using commercial strains that are probably far from senescence.  but in a sence you are right; there is no way to know for sure.  not sure why you wouldnt just wanna buy a commercial culture from a vendor;  that is likely where the mushroom farm is getting theres from.  get a few cultures under your belt, build up some creditials on this site and before you know it, you will be trading wedges on the fwt....

If you have a local mushroom farm in your area you can probably get a fresh mushroom from there. You could also spend $25 and get a Liquid culture from a sponsor, which would be your best option.
