They did defeat Finland. Finland surrendered and signed a peace treaty in march 1940.

Finland was only partially defeated by the USSR. During the first part of the war, initiated by the USSR in 1939 long before Hitler broke his alliance with Stalin, the finnish troops gave the invaders a very hard time: their kill ratio was about 1:5. In the peace negotations Finland surrendered 40,000 square kilometers, or only about 10% of their territory. You can call that defeat, but only a small partial defeat compared to what happened to most other victims of communist aggression.

Another interesting aspect of the contribution of the USSR is the question of POWs. In most countries the dangers you face as a soldier is being shot by the enemy or being mistreated by the enemy if you are taken prisoner. The russian communists added a new interesting aspect to all the other pains of being a drafted soldier: if you were taken prisoner, you were automatically assumed to be a traitor. In order to demonstrate the seriousness behind this threat, a certain number of russian POWs were shot by the communists after the war. The remaining ones (the "innocents") were used as slave labor in the GULAG concentration camps.

The notion of treating POWs in a humane way is unfortunately very seldom implemented. But the whole idea of systematically torturing your own freed POWs after they have been released seems to be a unique fruit of communist ideology.

I don't see how that has anything to do with communist ideology. I think it's because Stalin was a complete asshole.

Yes, Stalin certainly was a complete asshole, and communists all over the world adored him, even communists living in countries where Stalin had no power except through the ideology that united them. Of course there were communists who didn't agree. Most of them found, after a few microseconds of deep thought, that there were ideological problems behind all this, and they quietly abandoned communism. Some however went on believing in communism for decades, and even thought that Pol Pot was the savior of Cambodia, 22 years after Stalin's death. And as crazy as it sounds, there are even people alive today who think Fidel Castro is really a nice friendly person, even after two of his own daughters got fed up and fled from Cuba.

The only thing we know about Castro is what our Government feeds the media, which is only the negative things.  I'll bet if we heard about Bush from a communist's perspective, Bush would surpass Castro in evilness.

He may do that anyway, even in a sane, realist, non-communist perspective. I think Bush and Castro were about even (before Bush became president) in the game where you score every time you kill one of your citizens (Texas vs. Cuba). But now that Bush has become president, his powers to do evil has become vastly greater than Castro's, and George has shown very clearly that he has both the inclination and the capacity. But Bush will be history in less than two years (I hope). Castro on the other hand will stay in power as long as he lives, and who knows how long that will be? He has been the only allowed president since 1959 and he probably has the best health care in Cuba!
