What they really mean is: "I do things that other people will judge me for which will have adverse consequences on my life."  Of course, ultra invasive things such as wire taps or secret cameras in your apartment evoke an "uncomfortable" feeling; however, more minor "privacy" breaches such as Facebook really don't evoke the same reaction, at least to me.  It seems more like people do sketchy things and don't want people to know about that.  This is particularly notable in this site's (a site with some sketchy members) particular disdain for Facebook while the rest of the world thinks it's the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Not at all. Regardless of if I'm reading a book or drawing or watching TV or walking down the street, I just don't want people looking at me. I can feel their stares. Its like someone pressing down hard in the middle of my brain. Fucking annoying

I think you missed a paragraph here man, you sorta forgot to make a point. Or a reason for discussion. Sure, in the large scheme of things what does it matter if some dude at Facebook is allowed to read your message to a girl talking about how well she gives blowjobs. But the idea is you want the right for others NOT to read that. I don't see why thats hard to understand

From other posts of yours ive read I get the impression you are a very open person with very few inhibitions. Being ashamed in the sense that you think you shouldn't be doing it and being ashamed in the sense that you don't want the whole world to hear/know about it are entirely different things.

By this logic, why SHOULDN'T the government wiretap every single person? As long as they were only permitted to use the taps to prevent terrorism why shouldn't every citizen submit willingly to this?

Yes.  This seems to be my query.  I don't know.  I'm not sure how to evaluate the need for national security vs. some "wrongness" that comes from random people listening in on your conversations.  It seems to me that this wrongness would dissipate after a short time after you get used to it, thereby reducing the reasons for not doing this to not allowing your sketchy shit to get in the open.

Part of that is also because this website is much less mainstream.  I don't use facebook and hate it as well, but I have friends who use it and talk about their drug use in the open. 

The reason that I emphasize the importance of privacy doesn't really have any catches of indirect motives to it...I just like to act as I please without people knowing about everything I do all the time.

Sometimes when I have people over and they are in my room, even if they are my friends, I get this sort of uncomfortable feeling, and this sort of subtle, unspoken voice in my head speaking loudly at them, "I want you OUT."

I think it's in human nature to seek one consistent place to serve as a sanctuary where nothing is standing in the way of you and your development as self-intimacy.

I think the worst part is not know who is doing the listening. Sure its probably some stuffed shirt dude but maybe its not. Maybe its your father-in-law and hes hearing a story you are telling your buddy about fucking a prostitute. Maybe its your neighbor hearing you talk about doing a bunch of blow.

Plus many people (especially republicans) are afraid that it WON'T only be used for national security. What if during these wire taps they find out you are talking to a big drug lord? Where is your guarantee they won't use this evidence to force you to rat the guy out or be an informant? In a place that sends people to jail for life for dealing a substance people use to try to make their lives tolerable where is your evidence they are reasonable, fair people?

To be honest I think it boils down to that people don't want to be the center of attention. Sure its not a crime for you to be gay, but in a professional environment how can you be taken seriously if at every meeting the fag opinion is disregarded.

These reasons are all centered around revealing personal information about yourself that other people will frown upon.  Given this, it seems that a completely straight-laced person should have no argument to not have full disclosure of his communiques because he/she would have nothing to lose.

No one is a straight laced mother fucker. Which means that the people who we deem straight laced are just good at hiding it and the people we demonize are in actuality good people. Shit there's nothing wrong with having hemmroids in any sense of the world. But would you want someone to go over the PA system at a super market and scream your name telling them your hemroids medicine is ready.

Pretty much.  I feel that way about everyone and I think everybody does do things that they don't want to be judged for. 

My gran for instance couldn't even handle me smoking weed, I hid it from her for years, when she found out she cried for 3 days :lol: yet shes happy for me to drink poisenous alcohol :shrug:

humans in general have very odd ideas about life and can be very unaccepting of other people not living life to their standards or ideals.  Its a lot easier and healthier to keep some aspects of your life hidden from those who cannot or will not be able to accept them if you want to maintain a relationship with them.

Well, kind of.  I still speak my mind here.  I got off facebook because too many students and old coworkers are on there.  The legal profession has this "professionalism" garbage, and my rants could really hurt my career.

And shit, there's nothing wrong with your naked spouse, but you don't want a fucking camera monitoring you guys banging for all the government to see. I'm not sure why facebook and privacy are so often tied together. Most privacy concerns involving facebook are actually about just how public you want your posts to be. As opposed to the privacy of your email or messaging- where you have the assumption that that message is for the recipients eyes only. If anything facebook is a study on just how intimate of details people don't mind sharing with the world.

As for actual privacy, I like my privacy not because I am ashamed of what I do in it, but because there exists a certain freedom in privacy. People act differently when eyes are on them. People get preoccupied with people when they are around. I am much more natural in private. And what I whisper in someones ear is much different than what I shout across the room at them.
