I need a good heart rate monitor for working out
    #16606107 -

I need a good heart rate monitor for working out.  I already use my phone gps to track my bike rides, but I would like to have something to track my heart rate too so I can make sure I am staying in my target heart rate when I work out.

If anyone can make a suggestion I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

In my experience heart rate monitors are crap, they miss so many beats its totally unreliable.  I'm big though.

When I'm at the gym hopping between machines I notice some are 10-30 different than the last machine even though I'm maintaining the same amount of vigorous exercise. I wouldn't worry about monitoring your heart rate too much, does it feel like it's pumping hard? Good work then.

I use a Garmin forerunner 305 running watch ($165 at costco) with heart rate monitor.  From my experience, it seems fairly accurate when compared with my step dads heart rate monitor which he uses to monitor his heart condition.

I use it primarily for time/distance/speed metrics but heart rate and calories burned are interesting corresponding data.

I do plan on integrating heart rate training into my routines. From my understanding it is best to use heart rate zones to train for distance running (or other endurance events) more so than speed, laps, perceived effort, or other available metrics.

Using a date based or scientific approach to training is really the best way to become a better athlete. I used to fight it, "just go hard" i said... "i know my body" ...

This approach is less efficient at improving yourself, and bad advice IMO.

I work out to stay in shape, not to be an Olympic athlete.

I work out so my body can be as efficient as possible.
