The media also has a big role in the issue.

The Trayvon Martin case went national with so much race-card sensationalism it was insane. So many people were suddenly bolting upright in a WHERE IS THE JUSTICE reaction (presuming that the teen was unjustly killed).

But a SWAT team busts into someone's house in a no-knock raid and guns down a man not proven guilty of anything, and all he was holding was a gold club because he thought he was being robbed and was scared, and the media doesn't even give it a sniff.

This 'trend' in the media of rarely highlighting police corruption adds even more to the feeling that LEOs conspire and abuse power.

Also, in the story of the SWAT team, the department came out and said they felt the team's action were justified. Talk about throwing salt in the wound.

Now imagine if the department had come out and said that the inappropriate and careless behavior of some of those SWAT members was unacceptable and apologized for the horrible representation of the local LE team? Imagine the difference in people's reactions. They would nod and go alright, the department acknowledges the bad apples, that they were indeed bad apples, and will handle it. Instead people hear the department condoning it, and thus see every SWAT team the same way since it was acceptable.

There are LOTS of areas where the situation could be improved for both good LEOs and the citizens.

Quotas drive police to find crime even when there isn't any. That's why towards the end of every month we see cops chillin at speed traps

speeding isn't a crime?

i'm not trolling, i'm just asking. just because the laws seem 'unfair' doesn't mean we are allowed to break them.
yes i think it is more important to find a kidnapped child or break down the door of a kiddie porn studio but at the same time it is equally as important to get drunk drivers off the road, to get crack off the streets and to put gangbangers who lurk for evil and the chance to strike behind bars.

If a cop sees someone dangerously speeding and does something to stop it, that is certainly different from a cop going oh shit I gotta make that quota and pulling over people going 3 miles over just to make that quota.

It is the difference between being on the look out and hunting people.

That was a very informative video, although I'm quite aware of civil asset forfeiture.

I just figured I'd throw something out there. People tell me that I tend to speak with such certainty and authority that it makes me suspicious. That even when I do know what I am talking about that the way I talk makes it sound like I'm just pulling things out of my ass to be sensational. So now if I happen to think about it I always feel the need to show people something I have read/watched so it's not like just me going on and on.

No, speeding isn't a crime.  It's contrary to corrupt and unevenly enforced ordinances.

Being black isn't a crime.

Being Jewish isn't a crime.

Being Roma isn't a crime.

Being gay, or an invalid or an artist aren't crimes.

Being a non-subservient woman isn't a crime.

Refusing rape isn't a crime.

Gathering together with your friends on the street isn't a crime.

Publishing information derisive of the government isn't a crime.

Yet at one point or another all of these activities or statuses have been illegal or resulted in people being made second or third class "citizens", deprived of fundamental human rights namely that one's person nor property should be violated.

Ordinances have NOTHING to do with criminality.  Ordinances are just that.

Locking people up for possessing flowers is CRIMINAL.  Being in possession of flowers is breaking an arbitrary ordinance.

correct, it's not a crime, it's an offense which means you can still be charged under tort law

My best friend in high school (17 years old) was shot in the back (dead) as he walked away from an undercover.
He was unarmed, not breaking any laws, just walking home from school as an undercover approached him and told him to freeze.. he said fuck you and kept walking and the guy unloaded 6 shots in his back.
He thought he was some gang banger (because he was mexican). Even though the guy looked absolutely nothing like this suspect they were looking for.

The cop stayed on the force. A year later the family was so outraged they managed to get it re-investigated.
He got a 2 week suspension. A paid vacation, basically. For cold blooded fucking murder.

and this didn't make the news?
your friend was breaking no laws?
your friends family didn't sue the fuck out of the state?
this is a serious story and i doubt you would post it without being able to back the credibility of it. i am honestly inquiring atm.
