Wish I could help ya...

My book does not even list Gymnopilus armillatus, and a search for it on the web turned up nothing. It definitely looks like it could by a Gym! There are a few other things in my book that look kinda similar, too, though. Hopefully someone else here will be a better help.

The Gymnopilus aera looks very difficult to identifiy for me...i don't even try to look for it, because of the possible confusion with deadly look alike... :sad:

I can't find a reference to Gymnopilus armillatus in any of my references or anywhere on the Internet.

They do look like Gymnopilus of some sort. The conspicuous ring suggests they're close to G. validipes and G. spectabilis. The main difference Smith lists between those is that G. spectabilis is very bitter and G. validipes is not. He also suggests that they intergrade.
