Hey all, just wanted to make sure these are Gymnopilus validipes.
Found in Western New York. Base of hardwood. Growing in a cluster. Noticeable greenish hue around drying caps. Look and smell like gyms i have found before.

Thanks in advance! ~Grova

What makes you say g. validipes over junonius? I have noticed g. validipes fruits in larger numbers around now, but g. junonius is also out (I found 3 separate fruitings of it yesterday). Is the smell fragrant and slightly almond-like? Is the taste more mild than bitter? If both of these are true, then I'd call it g. validipes. Regardless, it's in the Gymnopilus Junonius species group and is active (at least if green bruising is observed upon drying- I'd need to see pictures to be sure, but I'm trusting your ability to pick out bruising).

Taste is definitely not very bitter. Hard to describe the smell other than smelling like gyms.
Definite bruising. hard to capture for some reason.

It's either that or maybe Gymnopilus junonius, taste is kind of a subjective term. You should post pictures of a cross section of one.

What differences would a cross section of validipes and junonius show?
