Tips for Virginia

I looked through the archives to see if there was any good info on hunting in VA, and didnt find much. My question is- is hunting a worthwhile in this state? I have heard that this region is not particularly rich in active mushrooms.

Also, for those in the know, what species of active mushrooms are predominant here, and what do they grow on (for ex, poop, rotting wood etc).

panaeolus subbalteatus in horse ranches on compost piles etc is your best bet. other east coast species im sure can be found in VA. but otherwise, its not far north enough for liberty caps really and not far south enough for subtropical shrooms.

so as for active mushrooms, VA is probably not overly abundant but i would suggest looking for Ps. caerilupes in decidious forests on wood debris etc 'near streams.' there have been several confirmed collections in WV.

I live in southwest va. and i've found alot of pan subbs. around here.

I have found Gyms just this side of the VA / WV boarder. I'm certain they could also be found in parts of Virginia, the hilly parts with deciduous forests.
