So uh... I was involved in a major explosion tonight. Could have potentially died. (Finale vid up!)

I already posted this on FB, so if you've read this just ignore it.

I shoot professional fireworks shows as often as I get a chance to. Tonight was the first one I've shot this season. I've shot about 15-20 in the past, without any problems at all (other than a low break). Unfortunately I can't say that the show tonight went off without a hitch tonight.

Short story: I was involved in a pretty serious explosion. I was very fortunate to only walk away with some tiny shrapnel wounds, damaged hearing, and torn shorts. The explosion could have very well taken off a leg or possibly killed me.

Long story: I lit a shell and it blew up in the pipe. Usually wouldn't be a very big deal deal, but this was a 3 inch titanium report and reports are the most powerful of the fireworks (the super loud ones with a bright flash). The pipe exploded and two racks were completely destroyed. Two other shells (thank god they were only color shells, not reports) also got lit when the initial explosion happened and they exploded on the ground in front of me. I was about 4 or 5 feet away. I lost about 90% of my hearing in my right ear when it happened, but now I have about 70% full hearing in that ear. My arms and legs are littered with tiny 1-5mm cuts from shrapnel. We still have no idea why it happened, probably a defective shell. I took a 2-3 minute break so that I my vision and hearing could come back and I could get over the initial shock, then went back to shooting shells.

That was a real eyeopener. I'm lucky to be alive. And yes, of course, I has pics of the damage:

Also, I finally took a decent video. Here's what the finale looks and sounds like like from a pyrotechnician's perspective. Those last really loud, really bright ones at the end of the video are the same thing that blew up in the tube:

Thats awesome and crazy.  I probably shouldn't play with fireworks.  I've never really had any accidents but this one time I was playing with little mortars while my friend shot real ones with his homemade launching system, I tried to shoot like 2 at the same time and 1 spiraled out and landed right next to this really hot chick :P  Boom.  That would have sucked to have burned her up.

Another time I lit smoke bombs in the house when we having a party,made every body real mad.  That was after some one gave me a fake lottery ticket though.  Thought I had won 5k :|

I've had this happen before with the smallest of mortars.
Those shook me up a bit; I cannot imagine experiencing the one you did.

I don't have any pictures of a 3 inch shell, but here's a picture of the largest shells we shoot on a somewhat regular basis (6 inch shells). If a 6 inch report shell would have exploded in the pipe at that distance, no doubt in my mind I wouldn't be here making this post. The shell that exploded in the pipe is exactly half the size of a 6" she. I have pretty ginormous hands, so keep that in mind:

Oyyy... I just took off my shorts to shower and it turns out I got a pretty nasty cut on my thigh from the flying wood shrapnel. Fucking stuff went through my thick shorts and into my leg. I have a feeling my tweezers and I will become very good friends tonight.

Hahahaha... That's consider kinda large for common shows. 6" is the largest we'll do handfires for, anything over that has to be electronic fire. I hate shooting 6" shells though, it's just punishing when they leave the pipe, makes your whole body ache. I'll show you a big firework that they use in competitions in a little bit. A 10 inch diameter cylindrical shell is a site to behold.

You wouldnt have died even with the six inch shell, moderately injured, some perf'd eardrums and ruptured capillaries shallow shrapnel wounds but nothing major. Flash powder doesnt carry enough brisance to kill with concussion alone not at that volume and distance.

FUCKIN  A! that's nuts.  I see crazy fireworks like this everyday and wonder what would happen if  that shit  blew. Glad your alright,  your posts make me laugh. So I'm glad you didn't die.  But if you don't mind me asking, do you shoot fireworks private company?
