I think they call that sniping, people use programs to do it. Ebay sort of just sucks generally anyway.

I've noticed that too. It's extremely annoying. Some item I want is repeatedly selling for five dollars. I bid ten dollars and forget about it. I check back in a few days. I lost and now every one of them is at the ten dollar mark.

I don't see myself as the problem. I simply bid the maximum I was willing to pay. The problem is the other users. They all must sort by ending soonest, only take the one at the very top into consideration when bidding, and do no research on what a good price is. If they would just say, "Oh this one is at $7. I think I'll bid on this other one which is ending 10 minutes later to save a two bucks" this problem wouldn't exist. We really must live in a world of instant gratification. People would rather spend twice as much and have something now than even a few minutes later for half the cost.

One good reason to bid is because bidding prevents the person who listed the auction from changing stuff. For example, if some dumbass lists his car for 99 cents and then decides it was a bad idea. Once I place a bid for 99 cents, there's no changing it.
