Nigger was the dehumanized word for signifying enslaved Africans, which in the centuries before slavery were simply called "Africans". "nigger" is an invention of the transatlantic slave trade to make their activities more palatable. "Africans" would imply humanness. This humanness was taken away, by law and by church and instead of a human being, the term "niggers" was used and instead of men, women and children they were reduced to bucks, wenches and pickaninny's in the dehumanization effort.

Implying "nigger" has nothing to do with race is very ignorant, the word comes straight from Latin to mean "black in color".

If you look in any unabridged dictionary you will find the original usage among the definitions.

You clearly need more education on English language history. I'm glad to help you, I was forced to study this in college.

All this is semantic history is really a nonsequitor to the issue of racism on the Shroomery because it's unrelated to the current accepted usage and context of the word. So lets try to keep sight of the issue at hand rather than getting caught up in a trivial bit of history.

even if there some really tactless smileys and pictures on this side i think people have to understand them as joke, and the diversity of smileys and pics jokes about nearly every culture and stereotype make this not racial because everybody is included not just black,or japanese also white and whatever. also its mostly not meant in the context to insult somebody and those who really use them for racial reasosons should be banned or get some other consequences.

Thats not exactly what the poll is about though.

First off its 79% :crazy: and secondly the question was whether people feel more efforts should be taken. Many of our members barely come in the Pub and avoid OTD, so they miss out on like 95% of whats out there.

This is however the Shroomery, not the N*ggery. Shrooms are at the core of this website, racial slurs and racist graemlins are fringe content that is up for discussion.

Just because we are a community centered around hallucinogenic mushrooms certainly doesn't mean anything goes.

The Shroomery frowns on victimizing content. Plotting murder or violence, bragging about arson, asking advice on theft, making threats and personal insults to fellow users and ripping people off, even cutting drugs is frowned upon here, and people get warnings and bans for it.

Some of us argue that racism, sexism and homophobia too is victimizing content. We get a million unique visitors a month, I'm pretty sure there's at least 100,000 people from varied minorities among them who could take direct personal offense.
