NYC Shroomerites: What's the word?
    #16146116 -

Some friends of mine are debating a move to NYC and it made me realize I don't really know much about the city, aside from what films and a few books have told me.

For the young, outgoing, non-student artsy types, what neighborhoods are best?

Break some of the stereotypes or drop some little known info. The first that come to mind are: cold, dirty, crowded, and expensive. But I want to hear about the gems of the city. :sun:

Unfortunately all the stereotypes you listed are true :frown:

Cheap places to live you will find in one of the boroughs, the worse the area the cheaper. Your best bet will be outer brooklyn/queens or you can look uptown in Harlem or even the Bronx. You could also look Washington Heights which is mostly Latin neighborhood.

Negatives aside, if you can swing it for a few years it's a fantastic place to live...and if you make the right connections, a drug user's paradise. Tripping in Central Park is an absolute favorite of mine. It's massive so plenty of quiet places, some woods, ponds, etc. It's amazing lying in a sunny meadow tripping face, then 10 min. later you can be enjoying the endless entertainment/food/sights/sounds of the city.

I lived there for 5 years, but I needed someplace more quiet as the crowds and fast pace can get tiresome. Even with 7-8 million people living there it can still be a very lonely place too so make sure you get out there and connect with people. Do it man...while you're young (if you are young)

I lived in Park Slope in Brooklyn for a little bit. Pretty nice neighborhood but you don't want to stray to far.

Expect to pay more for less.

Find locals who know where inexpensive stores/delis are.
