Time for another Dose!

Comes A Time
Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill.
Been walking all morning went walking all night I can`t see much difference between the dark and light And I feel the wind And I taste the rain Never in my mind to cause so much pain.
Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill.
From day to day just letting it ride. You get so far away from how it feels inside. You can't let go cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all.
The words come out like an angry stream. You hear yourself say things you could never mean. When you cool down you find your mind. You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind.
Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill.

"It Must Have Been the Roses" Words and music by Robert Hunter
Annie layed her head down in the roses She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know, it must have been the roses All I know is I could not leave her there
I don't know, it must have been the roses The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know maybe it was the roses All I know was I could not leave her there
Ten years the waves rolled the ships home from the sea Thinking well how it may blow in all good company if I tell another what your own lips told to me may I lay neath the roses and my eyes no longer see
I don't know, it must have been the roses The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know maybe it was the roses All I know was I could not leave her there
One pane of glass in the window No one is complaining though, come in and shut the door Faded is the crimson from the ribbons that she wore and it's strange how no one comes round anymore
I don't know, it must have been the roses The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know maybe it was the roses All I know was I could not leave her there
Annie layed her head down in the roses She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know, it must have been the roses All I know was I could not leave her there
I don't know, it must have been the roses The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair I don't know maybe it was the roses All I know was I could not leave her there

Dire Wolf
In the timbers to Fennario, the wolves are running round, The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground. Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
I sat down to my supper, 'twas a bottle of red whisky, I said my prayers and went to bed, that's the last they saw of me. Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
When I awoke, the Dire Wolf, six hundred pounds of sin, Was grinning at my window, all I said was "Come on in". Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
The Wolf came in, I got my cards, we sat down for a game. I cut my deck to the Queen of Spades, but the cards were all the same. Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.
In the backwash of Fennario, the black and bloody mire, The Dire Wolf collects his dues, while the boys sing 'round the fire. Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me. Please, don't murder me. No, no, no don't murder me. I beg of you, Don't murder me. Please, don't murder me.

ah, three hits! i'll make it four
"Eyes of the World" Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
Right outside this lazy summer home you don't have time to call your soul a critic, no Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home wondering where the nuthatch winters Wings a mile long just carried the bird away
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the World but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own
There comes a redeemer and he slowly too fades away There follows a wagon behind him that's loaded with clay and the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay The night comes so quiet and it's close on the heels of the day
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own Sometimes we visit your country and live in your home Sometimes we ride on your horses Sometimes we walk alone Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world but the heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings but the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own

Dupree's Diamond Blues
When I was just a little young boy, Papa said son, you'll never get far, Tell you the reason, if you wanna know, Cause child of mine, there isn't really far to go.
Well, baby baby wants a gold diamond ring, Wants it more than any old thing, Well when I get those jelly-roll blues, Why I go and get anything in this world for you.
Down to the jewelry store packin' a gun, Says, "Wrap it up I think I'll take this one." "A thousand dollars please," the jewelry man said, Dupree said, "I'll pay this one off to you in lead."
Well you know son, you just can't figure, First thing you know you're gonna to pull that trigger, And it's no wonder, your reason goes bad, Jelly-roll will drive you so mad.
Judge said, "Son, it's gonna cost you some time." Dupree said, "Judge you know that crossed my mind." Judge said, "Fact it's gonna cost you your life." Dupree said, "Judge you know that seems to me to be about right."
Baby baby you gonna lose her sweet man, Dupree come out with a losin' hand, Baby's gonna weep it up for a while, Then go out and find another sweet man's gonna treat her with style.
Judge said, "Son, I know your baby well, But that's a secret I can never tell." Dupree said, "Judge well it's well understood, But you got to admit that sweet Jelly's so good."
Well you know son, you just can't figure, First thing you know you're gonna to pull that trigger, And it's no wonder, your reason goes bad,
Same old story and I know it's been told, Some like Jelly Jelly, some like gold, Many a man's done a terrible thing Just to get, baby a shinin' diamond ring.

... some like jelly jelly... love that one
Attics of My Life
In the attics of my life Full of cloudy dreams unreal Full of tastes no tongue can know And lights no eye can see When there was no ear to hear You sang to me
I have spent my life Seeking all that's still unsung Bent my ear to hear the tune And closed my eyes to see When there were no strings to play You played to me
In the book of love's own dream Where all the print is blood Where all the pages are my days And all my lights grow old When I had no wings to fly You flew to me
You flew to me
In the secret space of dreams Where I dreaming lay amazed When the secrets all are told And the petals all unfold When there was no dream of mine You dreamed of me

This one's for you, Ripple (and it's also my favorite song from any artist-it expresses the meaning of life to me).
"Ripple" Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia. ("Ripple" composed and written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Reproduced by arrangement with Ice Nine Publishing Co., Inc. (ASCAP))
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air
(Chorus)
Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone
(Chorus)
You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home

Thanks Ripple! To be quite honest, I'm a little jealous of your user name. I wish I had it! Wanna trade? J/K of course. I feel that the last two stanzas of the song really do express life better than any other song. It's applicable to seekers, Buddhists, and regular dudes all at the same time.
You've probably already seen, but if not, enjoy! The following link is to a page on the Annotated Grateful Dead (great website!) that has some notes on Ripple and a line-by-line analysis on the song (it's not just the regular Ripple lyrics page-it's different). Really cool stuff. http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/dowling.html
Thanks for the shrooms (what if they were real?)!

Great opening dose...love that song...in my sig. Here's good one for you guys.
Words and Music from a late show- 07/29/88
I wanted to put the 6-14-76 version up but I couldn't find a link to it anymore(Damn gdlive)
"Crazy Fingers" Lyrics by Robert Hunter and Music by Jerry Garcia
Your rain falls like crazy fingers Peals of fragile thunder keeping time
Recall the days that still are to come Some sing blue
Hang your heart on laughing willow Stray down to the water Deep Sea of Love
Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea Swift undertow
Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know See how it feels in the end May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you Soft, strong, sweet and true
Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow Tapping at the window touch your hair
So swift and bright Strange figures of light Float in air
Who can stop what must arrive now? Something new is waiting to be born
Dark as the night You're still by my side Shining side
Gone are the days we stopped to decide Where we should go We just ride
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams Gone - both dream and lie
Life may be sweeter for this I don't know Feels like it might be alright While Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you Love still rings true
Midnight on a carousel ride Reaching for the gold ring down inside
Never could reach It just slips away but I try

Here's another one...Brokedown Palace. I connect this one with Ripple for a number of reasons. First, BP immediately follows Ripple on American Beauty. Plus, they're both the exact same length (4:09-coincidence, I think not ). And then there's the meaning of the songs. For me, Ripple is a sort of overview of life, advice to the seeker, and a sendoff for each of us to find our way:). Brokedown Palace, on the other hand, is like a retrospective piece-the seeker, now weary and gray, resting and still continuing to seek peace (but I think he's found a bit of it:)). Also, the river imagery reminds me of the river scene in Hermann Hesse's book Siddhartha, if anyone's read it-it's the scene in which Siddhartha sits and listens to the river and obtains peace and enlightenment. It this way, BP concludes the quest for personal peace that is described in the final 2 stanzas of Ripple. Oh, and the song is just so emotional, tender, and beautiful. Enjoy!!
"Broke-down Palace" Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.
Fare you well my honey Fare you well my only true one All the birds that were singing Have flown except you alone
Goin to leave this Broke-down Palace On my hands and my knees I will roll roll roll Make myself a bed by the waterside In my time - in my time - I will roll roll roll
In a bed, in a bed by the waterside I will lay my head Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
River gonna take me Sing me sweet and sleepy Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back back home It's a far gone lullaby sung many years ago Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home
Goin home, goin home by the waterside I will rest my bones Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
Goin to plant a weeping willow On the banks green edge it will grow grow grow Sing a lullaby beside the water Lovers come and go - the river roll roll roll
Fare you well, fare you well I love you more than words can tell Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul

Great song. I see Brokedown as a song about death. Hunter wrote it at the time Jerry's mom died as did Phil's father. When ever someone close to me passes on it's the first song I listen to. It's words evoke the feeling of letting go and dying to me. Leaving the Brokedown Palace that is the body.
I like how Hunter doesn't give many explanations about the meaning of his lyrics. He realizes that they can mean different things to different people. One thing is for sure. American Beauty contains some of the most heart felt lyrics in history.

"Wharf Rat" Words by Robert Hunter; Music by Jerry Garcia
Wharf rat down [sung as Old man down] way down down, down by the docks of the city, Blind and dirty asked me for a dime-- dime for a cup of coffee I got no dime but I got time to hear his story:
My name is August West and I love my Pearly Baker best more than my wine ...more than My wine more than my maker though he's no friend of mine
Everyone said I'd come to no good I knew I would Pearly believed them
Half of my life I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime Other half found me stumbling around drunk on burgundy wine
But I'll get back on my feet someday The good Lord willing if He says I may 'cause I know the life I'm livin's no good I'll get a new start live the life I should
I'll get up and fly away I'll get up and fly away... ...fly away
Pearly's been true true to me, true to my dying day he said I said to him: I'm sure she's been I said to him: I'm sure she's been true to you
I got up and wandered Wandered downtown nowhere to go just to hang around I got a girl named Bonny Lee I know that girl's been true to me I know she's been I'm sure she's been true to me
