Indie anyone?
    #16032938 -

So this album came out years ago, but I just found out about these guys...

Anyone wanna share some similar artists? I'm in dire need of new music to listen to.

can't say i even listened to the videos OP but here is a band i always thought was one of the earliest bands to have a sound much like what a lot of "indie" bands have aped since then:

a whole EP:

live video:

seriously though this came out in the beginning of the 80s, even though the countless bands that took influence from them vary from shitty to great i love these guys

I really like how the first one ends.

i'm gonna have to overrule you on that...i'm reluctant to do this because the word indie has always left a sour taste in my ears since lots of so-called indie bands suck and many aren't even on indie labels...but regardless of the quality (or lack thereof) of modern-day "indie" bands, in terms of influence and veneration one band stands looming above the rest:

in other words the velvet underground are the shit and if you like any of this hipster shit nowadays just know that it probably wouldn't exist without them

oh yeah, and you probably haven't heard of them.

you know i liked the velvet underground before it was cool. i saw them at max's kansas city years before i was conceived and i still managed to not dance or look like i was having any fun.

are you serious? Velvet Underground aren't "indie" they are just the fountainhead of like all alternative music.

IMO Indie culture is something that started to flourish around the year 2000 due to the internet.  Ya know...Pitchfork, Urban Outfitters, Blogs, Flannel...musically Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, all those P4K darlings.

well for one "indie" is as meaningless of a genre descriptor as "alternative" is...probably one of the few common traits you could find in any band labeled as either one is that their influences likely trace back to lou reed john cale & company...

i'm not arguing with you there, i mean much the same could be said for the Beatles and Led Zeppelin as over-arching sources.

but the fact is, people say "hipster" or "indie" and that means something.  A hipster of today is different from a hipster of the 1960's/

I saw both Panda Bear and Beach House at a festival  last time I :awecid2: 'd.

Panda was great. THe hits started to kick in just as his music flipped out and his blinking light video thing went all technicolor bio-porn. Most people in the audience couldn't handle it and left after a song or two. The people who were left at the end of the set looked like they were all on something.

Beach House I can't remember very much of. I'm pretty sure it was them, though. The music sounded like a sunset, if I remember right, but it's also possible that the sun was setting at the time.

oh absolutely. except there was kind of a parallel, the hipsters and hepcats of the beat era were white bohemian types that immersed themselves in black culture and such, now you've got the so-called hipsters now flocking to places with histories of working class/minority culture like the lower east side and gentrifying the fuck out of them...not that i have a problem with them for that but i can see why people could be annoyed by trust fund kids "slumming"

anyway i hate the word hipster in its modern sense, whenever i hear somebody bitching about "hipsters" the meaning always just seems to be someone who the speaker doesn't like and happens to be a snappy dresser or a fan of offbeat or quirky new music. not that a ton of the people considered hipsters aren't douchebags, just that like the words indie and alternative, hipster is just a catch-all insult that doesn't mean shit anymore.

i just realized the only thing that could sound more pretentious and hipstery than my last couple posts is if i tried to present them ironically...ITS SO HIPSTER THAT ITS NOT

anybody heard amps for christ? dude started out in a (fucking amazing) powerviolence band called man is the bastard, some people seem to talk shit about this project being too pitchfork indie type stuff but i've yet to come across really any people who have heard of them so i don't know how they could argue that they're pandering to the trend or any shit like that...they're really creative and good in my opinion:
