sure you could.

i think what most people have a problem with is gray's commercial success. in some cases that can really ruin an artist, but in gray's case he seems to be getting better with age. that shulgin portrait is recent and it's much more vivid and intense than his stuff from the 80's imo.

I hadn't heard of this guy by name, but I recognize a lot of the paintings. It seems like a lot of people are knocking him on the basis that his work seems overrated. Some of the images do seem a bit uninspired or derivative, but overall I'd say I find a lot of them pretty interesting. As for artists who make a career out of half-assed rehashes of their earlier works, I'd say Andy Warhol was a better example. IMO none of his stuff that I've seen was ever all that good, but he was able to just coast on fumes for years and years.

An artist who some of this Grey guy's stuff reminds me of a little (particularly the tree with tits one) is William Kurelek. His paintings range from subdued farmland scenes to full-out apocalyptic visions. Some of the farmland type pictures will have something menacing like a mushroom cloud in the distance if you look closely. Stylistically it's not very similar otherwise though.

Prove it.

If you are an "average" painter you can not just magically duplicate what Alex
does. You are batshit crazy if you think thats possible. Maybe in the case of
an idiot savant or some shit but certainly from not taking drugs.

Without the shadows and stuff?

I think Alex Gray is just one of those people who may be a good artist, but got too hung up on a particular concept.
I feel like he never would've been famous if he'd tried conventional art. But in an area such as the drug culture, with such a small and dedicated following, somebody with a trippy style can be immensely popular.

There are more talented artists out there, but Alex Gray had an original and distinctive idea. Sadly, the appreciation of his style caused him to stagnate and become more of a one-trick pony.

I would deny the "astronomically fucking" part. But I guess that's subjective.
