T5 grow light?
    #15812077 -

I've been thinking about investing in a grow-light.  I know some people on here have some large expensive set-ups but that isn't the sort of things I'm after.  Just looking for something that will let me get my chili plants germinated earlier in the year and help cacti seedlings come along.  I know the board doesn't like links to venders so I'll just describe the one I've found - it's a light and metal frame all in one that is perfectly sized to sit over my propagator.  Says its a "a high output T5 full daylight spectrum bulb" but to be honest I know nothing about grow lights.  Wondering if anyone with bit more experience could tell me if this is worth it for all I'm wanting to use it for?

t5's are a good move for cactus seedlings and chilis, I like growlux myself; they've always worked really well.

But you can't expect them to be good for full sun type of plants and such, just for seedlings.

"High output" T5s (T5HO) are what people usually mean by T5 in a gardening context and put out a lot more light (lumens) per tube than other tube lights ("high efficiency" T5HE are more energy efficient but put out less per tube.) For spectrum, the colour temperature (e.g. 6500K) gives more information than a description like "daylight".

Depending on pricing in your area, it might be easier and cheaper to go with T8 fixtures if you mostly want a fixture for things like raising seedlings. They are roughly as efficient as T5HO but the fixtures and tubes are likely to be cheaper and easier to find at a local store.

I'd go with a T8 simply because the bulbs are more available and cheaper. For the purposes you describe a T5HO is overkill.

I agree, you can get a t8 shop light and bulbs for around thirty bucks, and it will work just as good.

Just get a 4'- 4bulb T5 unit. they are around $150-$200 from many different vendors and are the most bang for your buck in the flouro world anyway (excluding HID). they will support full growth up to around 2' tall IME. If you only need to raise seedlings T8's are fine.

Cheers for the replies folks.  Quick question for those suggesting different set-ups.  What I'm really needing, and what attracts me to the item I've found online, is that it is free-standing and simply needs plugged into a normal wall socket.  Everything else I seem to come across involves wiring it up and / or getting a structure for it separately.  This just a reflection of the stuff I've come across online or will it be the same with the stuff I can find in a local store?

The shop lights I have plug in to the wall and have screw holes to mount them on the underside of something. I just made a shelving unit out of plywood and 2 x 2's and mounted the lights on the underside of each shelf.

If you buy a T8 or a T5 rig at a hardware store you shouldn't have anything to install except the bulbs. If you buy online you can opt for a fully assembled unit (the way to go if you are unsure) or you can purchase the components separately and wire it up.

There are relatively cheap setups available online that work well. I bought mine online and my only issue is the lack of reasonably price locally available bulbs. Other than that I'm quite happy. I don't go through bulbs to often so it's not that bad, but it's a pain when one goes.

Thanks again all for the advice - greatly appreciated.

Here's a wee photo-log of my chili plants from last year, hoping with the grow-light I can get them started earlier so they are larger when they move  outside.
