Somebody's giving me a Droid a855. What can I do with it?

Is the micro USB port just for getting data in/out of the phone, or can it be used like a regular USB port on a computer?

Can I use a Droid as a microcontroller, much like I would use an Arduino?

One thing I can't do with it is make phone calls, because it doesn't work on my network (Net10), so this phone is purely for hacking purposes.


Suggestions?

That mostly depends on the software that's running on the system, but I figure that it should be usable as a host controller. You'd have to acquire/write drivers for the specific devices you would want to connect though.

Uhm, well, that depends a bit on the application you want to use it for, and on the question if you want to write a custom operating system for it or if you're going to use Android. I'm not sure what possibilities Android offers to developers for accessing the actual hardware of the phone.

Use it to mess around with Android as a developer. See what you can/can't do and learn about Android as an OS that way. It should be interesting.

The coolest thing that comes to mind, is I'd like to turn it into a wireless file server so that anyone in range could access and download files from it.

I could make it weatherproof and solar powered and put it in a tree, then people could download (and maybe upload) files from that tree.

Maybe I could put a BBS in a tree so people can log on to it.

That's a neat idea. Perhaps it's possible to install Linux on the Droid and configure it like any regular Linux box for file serving purposes.

So I got my a855. I'm posting from it right now, in fact.

I actually got two broken ones, and scavenged parts to make one good phone. I Have two good boards, an extra touchscreen, and other small parts.

It connected to my home wi-fi without any trouble. I can get internet all the way out into the neighbor's yard.

Not bad. So you can use one phone as-is, and you could use the rest of the parts for your server project!
