I forgot all about that rule, but it's usually the way I type!

I always use a comma before the "and."

It's purely stylistic.

European writers typically do not use a comma before "and".  British and Americans do.

The general argument against using it (as far as I am aware) is that the and/or signifies the next list item anyway.  In the case of the OP image, it is considered better practice to place words that are paired early in the list to eliminate confusion of the conjunction denoting the next list item.

This is serious business, in this thread.

I like toast and Orange Juice.  The toast gets soggy though.

I use it depending on the nature of the text. If it would change the context then I would use it. If not then I would not.

Makes sense really?

Pretty sure Britain is in Europe.. Was last time I checked.

I lived in Oxford for 20 years and don't use the "Oxford" comma..

I always use it.  Just a habit, mostly, but I do see the sense in the grammatical arguments for it.

I had a couple professors in college mark those as errors on essays and had to lay into them.  Can't say I didn't enjoy arguing with them until they went back to correct their corrections on my paper.

Pretty sure the author's statement was meant to imply Britain as the exception to the rest of Europe.

The exception being we're the only English speaking nation (barring Ireland; also in the EU) and thus the only country this thread would be relevant to..?

I wouldn't be surprised if Italians/Dutch/French/Germans etc didn't use the Oxford comma, as the construct of their languages is entirely different..

All nations on continental europe produce lots of writings and documents written in english.  English is the language of science and business worldwide - every country has its way of writing english.

So by definition they do not speak or write the "Queen's English" which is in essence what we're discussing, and thus are also irrelevant to this thread.

I love arguing semantics sometimes. :crazy2:
