Any good idea's for a small pet?

I'm wanting a small pet that preferably fits in a small cage/tank. I haven't gone to a pet store yet to look around, but I've been thinking about it for a while. I'm good with pets, take great care of them, and would like one to play with and sometimes just chill with. I'm not wanting a dog though, any thoughts?

Holland Lop. You can litterbox train them as easily as a cat. Make sure to get them fixed, and they are very friendly. They love humans, but you have to let them hop around an area outside their cage once a day for a hour or so.

Ferrets are really awesome little guys, and the best fucking stoner pets in the world. I could sit there and watch my two play for hours. The only problem is they are kind of high maintenance as far as bathing, cleaning poop, cutting nails, cleaning ears and all that. And you really have to be active with them or they get lonely.

Ferrets aren't a good pet if you want something that fits in a tank - not only do you need a fairly large cage, they need at least 2 hours of play time every day....and it will be the craziest, cutest playing, and you really should have at least 2 so they can play with each other.

Skip the next paragraph if you aren't interested in ferrets...

Also, be prepared for higher vet bills - they usually get problems around 3-5 years old. There's adrenal disease, which happens to about half of the ferrets out there (treatable with surgery, or you can possibly slow the tumor growth and get a shot of Lupron or an implant of Deslorelin which lasts about a year and is cheaper than Lupron, a new experimental drug in the US your vet can get from Australia); insulinoma (blood sugar problems caused by tumors on the pancreas, surgery is not usually a good idea since it comes back and the tumors are usually microscopic...use Prednisilone to control symptoms with frequent meals, and Diazoxide when that stops working); then lymphoma, which there are a few protocols out there as far as chemotherapy goes, but if it's intestinal or abdominal, it is usually a matter of putting the ferret to sleep before you can even try chemo, and nor would it be recommended...if they have a tumor and you aren't doing chemo and it's not removable, higher doses of steroids can extend their life if they are still eating and drinking and not in pain, you'd be surprised how long they can live with a slow growing lymphoma tumor sometimes so lymphoma isn't an instant death sentence; ADV, Aleutians, distemper (yes they can get distemper from other animals so they need a vaccine if you work around other animals because you can track it in on your shoes), rabies (not likely to get it so lots of people don't vaccinate but there is a yearly ferret rabies vaccine as well), various skin lesions or tumors (usually benign but must be removed before they cause issues)...and some other things. But the main 3 are adrenal disease, insulinoma, and lymphoma.

If you do want a ferret you can pm me for lots of resources. They sleep most of the time, and also - when they're sleeping and they already had their play time recently, you can put them in your lap without waking them up sometimes, which is relaxing if you're into that.

If you want something to "chill" with you I'd suggest adopting a laid back cat, though I know you're looking for small animals. It might sound weird but if you like rats or mice well enough you could raise one from a young age and teach it to chill on your shoulder. I agree sugar gliders are cool, but they can "bark" which sounds like miniature chihuahuas invaded your house haha...and they require a varied diet which when done properly can take a bit of time and thought to do right. But they are indeed cool!

Do pet stores usually cary holland lops? and do you own any sugar gliders yourself? and how many?

And I was thinking of a frog or toad, but wasn't sure how interactive they would be.

Just call the local shops, and yes, most mom and pop stores will have lops as they are pretty popular, though around this time you're going to have some slim pickings due to Christmas. But if you want to make sure you have a purebred one you should go to a breeder.

Rabbits are great pets.

I think you should either get a kitten or a rabbit, they are both extremely easy to take care of. All you need to do is feed them and sort out a little dish if you live somewhere they cant go outside to piss/poop. My cats (i have 3) all go outside to do their business, all i need to do is feed them. Plus kittens are very playful and loving, you wont get board of them. Same goes for rabbits

Rabbits stink. Ferrets stink. I don't care how great you take care of them, if someone comes into your place they will smell them. If you don't care about smell, opt for some kind of small mammal. My personal choice would be a hedgehog, they're just so fucking cute and easy to care for.

If you want something that doesn't stink and is fairly low maintenance go for a reptile of some sort. Your best option would be a bearded dragon. They stay relatively small (1.5ft tops) can be kept in a tank and eat prepared foods (though the do LOVE live insects and should get them on a regular basis). The best thing about them is they are active during the day and very receptive to their owners. They'll chill out with you on the couch and watch TV or just sit on your shoulder or lap while you're at the computer. Only thing that might deter you is they have to have a lot of heat. They need to be kept at 85-95F during the day and they have to have UV light (specifically UVB) or they will get metabolic bone disease. Do some googling, you'll probably find out they're pretty awesome and not too hard to care for.

Other options for a beginner lizard keeper are the crested gecko and leopard gecko. Both are nocturnal. Cresteds are much easier to care for because they eat a fruit based diet(which comes in a powder form that you mix with water), whereas leopard geckos only take insects.

Frogs are cool too but they're generally a "look but don't touch animal". Their skin is easily irritated. That said, there are some cool ass frogs out there. My favorite are the "fat frogs" or "big mouth" frogs. They have a mouth full of teeth and eat mice when they are full grown. If you want more info on them ask away.

If you're looking for something uber easy to take care of get a snake. They're usually not as personable as some lizards but still cool. If you go for a snake I recommend a western hognose. They truly do get to know their owners and they are retardedly easy to take care of.

Cobras are always a good bet too, especially if you have no experience with venomous snakes and have a death wish. I saw them at a reptile show in PA recently and had to ask the guy who was selling them if he was selective with his buyers. I was glad to hear that he made potential buyers explain how to care for and handle them. Same with the guys selling the Gaboon vipers and rattlesnakes.

they are literally one of the worst smelling pets.


if you want a clean small convenient animal that is cheap to take care of and is intelligent, capable of bonding, and extremely cute, get a rat.  and not the creepy ass albino kind, the ones that are white with black spots.  very rewarding experience.  they learn tricks easily, love being pet, and god damn are they cute :smile:
