Signature Length?

Has the maximum number of characters in a signature been changed recently?

I've had the same sig for quite awhile, well over a year now, but I went to change my avatar the other day and upon doing so was told that my signature was now too long.

Any idea how/why this happened?  Not a big deal to me, but just curious if it's some kind of bug-gery.

I'm not aware of such a change. maybe you were a supporter and now you aren't? :shrug:
supporters have 1,500 characters available for their signature while regular users just 750.

also check for hidden extra spaces at the end, pets walking on keyboards and whatever may be plausible.

i experienced the same thing a few weeks ago.  had the same settings and sig. since i joined.
i was gonna change my title, but it said my sig. was too long,


so i just left it alone. i like my sig too much to part.

so mods, what the deal?

We requested a change some time ago, but it appears the new standard is too short.  Many members were posting half a book in their sigs and that was the problem.  The error message says 'ten lines' but I tried to update my sig to far less than ten lines and it wouldn't go either.

I don't think it's a supporter/non issue either, since I couldn't change mine.

Does it only happen when you try to update your avatar? I'm able to log in as you and change your basic settings without receiving an error about your sig length...

Well, my sig is shorter now.  I had to change it to be allowed to change my avatar.

1) I changed my avatar picture.

2) When I hit update (to save avatar picture change), I was told my sig length was too long.

3) I changed my sig length by deleting about a third of it in order be able to successfully complete the update process from #2.

Does this make sense?

Just to clarify, I didn't change my sig length at all when I updated my picture.  It was the same as it's been for a long time now.  My avatar picture was the only thing I changed at that time.

That signature is 11 lines, so it does in fact exceed the 10 line limit. Perhaps that is too short like RR says; however I believe it's technically working as it's supposed to. If anyone else has a sig they think should work, but it's not being accepted, please post it so I can take a look.

maybe take out the spaces between the quote and the person who said it?

what was the old limit on picture size?    my sig. is 4.9 MB and was fine as of june, and now it says the limit is  65536bytes. 

seems like a big reduction.  i know that some people get crazy with the sig. lengths, but i think mine is pretty reasonable.

can i compress it or something to make it work?  i want to change my avatar, but i can't make any changes without losing the sig

Yah, it's easily fixable.

I didn't know there was a ten-line maximum, the only requirement listed w/ the form is that the limit is 750 characters.

This should likely be updated to avoid confusion.

Thanks very much, I figured it out. Multiple consecutive spaces were being converted to ' ' (the HTML code for a non-breaking space), and instead of being counted as a single character they were being counted as six. This could easily push a signature over the character limit. It should be fixed now, please let me know if you still notice problems.
