Petition: Let HR 2306 Get a Hearing
    #15340752 -

In order to move this bill forward it has to be scheduled for a hearing before either the House Judiciary Committee or the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) has publicly stated that he would not even consider giving the bill a hearing. The Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), does not have a definitive stance on HR 2306. It is time to discuss the facts and have an open, honest conversation about the devastating consequences of marijuana prohibition.
Over the past 70+ years, the federal criminalization of marijuana has:

1) Failed to reduce the public’s demand for or access to cannabis.

2) Imposed enormous fiscal and human costs upon the American people.

3) Promoted disrespect for the law.

4) Reinforced ethnic and generational divides between the public and law enforcement.

This debate is long overdue. Contact Representatives Smith and Upton today and ask them to schedule a hearing for HR 2306.

Hah. This Lamar guy won't do anything no matter how many people petition him.. his approval rating is already one of the lowest among all congressmen but what does he care when he makes millions for special interests?

Lamar Smith is the reason this got blocked last time around.
He's a slimy piece of shit that's completely out of touch with his constituents.

While I'm sure online petitions give some people a woody and a feeling of having done "something", it's a waste of time.

Write and call your representative to make your feelings known.

They take phone calls and letters far more seriously.

Don't stop there. Vote. Then you've actually done something.

In presidential elections roughly 40% of Americans don't vote. That number jumps to roughly 60% in off year elections.

Encourage your friends, families, co-workers and acquaintances to get off their asses.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

I call my congressman when I want to voice a concern. I've called a few about marijuana already and have gotten a positive response once through email.    I wanna call this Lamar guy when he's in office and ask him why he support arresting 800,000 Americans every year.

I agree petitions are mostly a waste of time but I think phone calls are a good means of getting heard. If you can get the guy on the phone you can shove facts in their face and see how they react.

All you're going to get is a generic response about keeping America safer by taking illegal drugs off the street and keeping kids off drugs.  Or some other general catch-all slogan Politicians use to skirt drug law reform.
The only thing that can fix this is getting the right people in office.  Smith is a TX representative and as such, as long as he's running on the Republican ballot, he's a shoe-in.
