Dr. Who
    #1526447 - 05/07/03 12:07 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

My cable system gets about 8 different PBS stations from all over the NY/NJ/PA area. All of them carry Dr. Who at different times throughout the week, and there are Dr. Who marathons comming up on at leat 2 of those stations this weekend. My question is, who the hell is watching all of this Dr. Who? The stories are dull, the writing is awful, the acting is below par even for public access shows or small town theater, and the costumes and special effects make any Ed Wood movie look like the Matrix. So, what is the attraction to this show? I don't get it. I admit I'll sometimes watch it for about two minutes because it is so cheesey it's funny, but the novelty wears off in a hurry. Somebody must be watching all of this Dr. Who or it wouldn't take up so much air time on PBS. Can someone explain this whole phenomena to me?

I loved that show when I was a really small kid, having British parents makes you watch dry British shows. The one thing about Dr. Who is nobody can deny it has the absolute without a doubt BEST theme song. My favourite Dr. was the one that wore the long scarf and he had long curly brown hair illistrated here :

That's the one thing I really do like about the show, the theme song. I always thought that the Dr. Who theme was sort of a rip off of Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days".

I've never seen the show, so I have absolutely no clue. Just thought I would share.

If anything it's the other way around. The Dr.Who theme song was written in 1963.

I don't buy the 1963 thing for the Dr Who theme song. The whole piece is synth based. No one could even write a piece like that until the early 70's, because there were no electronic instruments to support it. Besides, the whole sound of the thing is early-mid 70's. No one was compsing or recording music like that in '63, that's pre Beatles for Christ sake. I would like to know when that piece was really written though.

No one asked you to buy it. But alas it's true. Dr.Who theme song origin

I've seen the show on the sapace channle black and white from the first few seasons. The theme song is the same.

When I was a kid I found it TOO scarey. It seemed to be one of those things - you either loved it or hated it.

Oh my God, the Dr. Who theme song is the GREATEST!
I think the curly-haired guy was my favourite Dr. Who too, although there is something really creepy about him. Maybe it's just because he was such an ugly bastard. I guess he is just the one I was most familiar with as a kid because most of the re-runs I was watching had him in them.
Honestly I don't really remember much of the show anymore, except for the tardis (what a great word) and that spastic robot dog K9 and that all the chicks in it used to run around looking like filthy cavewomen, and all the monsters used to be made from styrofoam and garbage bags and shit. I loved that show!

There is some English TV that I love, especially 60's and 70's stuff. It's quirky in it's own strange way. I like The Avengers, and I love The Prisoner, they run that every Sunday here. I also like Are You Being Served, that shit cracks me up. So does Bargain Hunt, the show where they buy all sorts of flea market junk and sell it at auction. The guy who hosts that show is such a pompus tool, I can't get enough of that show. We should start a seperate thread about the best Brit TV shows.

I used to think Tom Baker was the shit, but over the years I've come to like the others better, and can't really choose one over the other. I think there were more Tom Baker episodes than any other.

I think Baker is still my favorite doctor, but the Pertwee episodes are my favorite episodes. I haven't seen very many Hartnell, or Troughton episodes.

Davidson was ok, more than tolerable, but Colin Baker sucked balls. They tried to hard to Americanize the show I think.

How come they never show the old B&W episodes? All I ever see are the ones with the afro Dr. Who and the blonde dork Dr. Who. I know there are lots of others, but PBS never seems to run them.

Not sure. One reason is that there are many lost episodes.

Dr. Who was origionally a children's show BTW.

I thought the X-Files needed a Dr. Who ending.

Impending doom aliens are here, end of the world type stuff, then Dr. Who comes along and saves the world in an hour and a half.
