Re: Are you on SSRIs? Tell me if what I think is true. [Re: MorphinTime]
    #15214241 -

When I was 11-14 my school required me to take an SSRI to attend because I was deemed emotionally unfit. Though when I was 11 my parents divorced and at 13 I moved away from all my friends and ect. Those type of things can be stressful for any kid. I didnt need fuckin prozac or abilify or ritilin or ambien in me. But that was often the case. Ive been on over 50 different SSRIs. And funny as im typing this my moms watch Dr. Drew praise this bullshit, anyways I lived with the worse apathy for years and finally almost ended my life. It was around the first time I also had my first psychedelic trip and it was on mushrooms.
I went through what felt like 10 years of healing psychotherapy. The next day I woke with no apathy, I didnt feel rendered void of my emotions. Infact I could feel a whole range of emotions as if it were the first time in my life (This apathy spell was about 6 years long)

I dont think Ive ever shed more tears of joy then when I did that morning.

SSRI's... In my whole life out of the hundreds of people Ive gotten close to who are on them, they have rarely seemed to work.. especially without side effects. I think they are impenitent and a terrible medicine. Straight life ruining trash.

I think someday far in the future psychedelics will find there way into a modern type of therapy for the masses and prove to be a million times more effective then SSRIs.

Everybody has a hard time with depression and anxiety, they're states of misery with which most of us are acquainted.

Some people get seriously stuck though. I was surprised by the last couple episodes of South Park because they seem to give an unusually sympathetic picture of major depression. Everything is bullshit, you can't care about anything, people watch you going through life like a zombie, your friends try to help you but they're unable to sympathize, there's no end in sight and no fucking way out that isn't pharmacological.

I don't speak from experience with major depression, but having experience with depression and anxiety is a different thing than having Major Depression. People die from Major Depression.

The cure is to find the cause.

If the depression has a biological cause, then antidepressants are the cure.

Clinical depression almost always presents with altered brain functions, but the actual etiology of these alterations varies widely. Sometimes the neurological alterations are reversible and are the result of emotional problems that stack up and become behaviorally self-sustaining.

On the other hand, sometimes major depression is actually just caused (in the first place) by faulty wiring in the brain, and not by psychological issues. Just like how schizophrenia can have a purely genetic basis, so too can depression. Same with anxiety/panic disorders. No diet, no amount of positive thinking, or exercise, or talk therapy can help some sufferers. Sometimes the only thing that works is drugs... or booze.

Antidepressants are overprescribed definitely but they obviously have their place.

Wow that is fucked. If the teacher that said that was fat, id say youd have to start a diet to come back to school because you are physically unfit.

'Emotionally unfit'. What a crock of shit. I thought they were there to teach you, not mold you into what they deem 'normal'. Oh wait our school system is ancient and horrible. When I was in school half the kids were on adderall, and the other half were on paxil. Disgusting if you ask me.

Hey Patial,  I have been on SSRIs for 7 years and starting about 2 months ago I started to reduce my dosage to get off of them.  Currently I have been completely off for about a month.  I am going through some crazy psychological stuff right now.  I feel like my personality is all scrambled, I have no patients whatsoever, my libido is through the roof, I have intense mood swings and the list goes on.  I am hoping that this is just a phase and my neurochemistry will stabilize in a few weeks.

In the past I have tried unsuccessfully to get off of SSRIs, but I am feeling confident that I will succeed this time.  Hind site is 20/20 and I feel like they helped me when I needed them.  Most people who bash them don't need them.  I find it amusing that many people will defend their drug of choice to no end and then turn around and say that antidepressants have no therapeutic effects.  As Shroomism stated, they are not for everyone, and you know what, neither are psychedelics, pot, alcohol, etc.

Antidepressants have positive, neutral, and negative side effects. But don't all drugs?  Just go to erowid and read the effects page of any drug.  For me, the positive effects allowed me to get my life back on track when I was seriously derailed.  Negatively, I gained about 50 lbs. Just to name a few.  I do feel that these drugs are addictive in a way.  I would call it Neurological addiction though rather than physical or psychological though, because they do alter your neurochemistry.  This is something that drug companies will not likely admit.

Ultimately, I hope to move on from them, because I don't want to be dependent upon any drug.  Do I regret taking them?  No.

Keep an open mind.:peace:

I hate it how people think that all their ailments can be cured by a single pill.

Oh just take this pill and you'll lose weight, you'll gain a shitload of muscle, you won't be depressed anymore...we have a solution to every problem encapsulated and sold, when the REAL solution to your shitty problems is all in your brain. It's all under your control.

Fuck anti-depressants

Dude, every post I see coming from you is totally negative. You have zero empathy and seem primarily concerned with feeding your ego with the shortcomings and misery of others.

You are not the shit. You do not have all the answers. You do not know what other people are going through. You're not qualified enough even to comment on things like this, but you're still going to act like the stream of useless insensitive garbage you just dumped on us is meaningful or important somehow, because you need it so badly to contrast with your own meaningless life.

Sorry if I just came across as a dick, but I felt somebody had to say it... :whistling:

Disagree. His posts have been better lately if anything.

I take SSRI's and I can say that I don't feel in any way like what you described.

Sometimes I feel like they don't really do anything, but I think that's just because I expected them to make me magically happy rather than knowing it just stabilizes my mood.

Either way it helped remove a lot of my pessimism towards life and make me feel more normal.

Also haven't experienced any side-effects as of yet, which is odd

I agree with this. My perspective right now is that there's nothing wrong with the idea of psych drugs. Any consenting adult should have the right to take a drug that might improve his emotional state.

That said, forcing these pills down your kid's throat is fucking criminal. Amphetamines get prescribed to fucking four-year-old kids. That is just fail parents and future double-fail kid.

So I've been taking that shit for a few years now, I guess it made things better.

I watched a TED video and the women was saying that the increase in serotonin in the brain takes up the available space and limits dopamine in the brain. Then she started talking about the consequences of that.

Two of these consequences got me seriously thinking. The lack of dopamine creates apathy and anhedonia.

Apathy: a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest in or concern about emotional, social, spiritual, philosophical or physical life.

Anhedonia: defined as the inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable, e.g. hobbies, exercise, social interaction or sexual activity.

So that pretty much describes why I don't give a shit and why I don't like to do the things I used to love...

Any thought on this? Can anyone else relate to this?

I used to take ssris, like lexapro. and i regret it, there are other ways to become happy decrease anxiety by a change of lifestyle, and goals. ifi  were you i'd stop the ssri's. if you consider changing yourself helpful then by all means continue. But i recommend group therapy. believe me it feels alot better to share about your depression and problems in person with other people in similiar situations. it takes a weight off your shoulders and people dont judge you at all. but your in control of your life, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive this, and move on.

In a controversial meta-analysis published in 1998, Irving Kirsch and Guy Sapirstein compared the mean effect size changes in symptoms of depression across 19 double-blind studies assessing the efficacy of antidepressant medications. Results demonstrated that placebos reproduced approximately 75% of the improvement found in the active drug. Furthermore, the authors assert that the remaining 25% of improvement accounted for by the active drug is debatable, and could be the result of an enhanced placebo response due to the side effects that patients experience when taking the active drugs, or other nonspecific factors

Nope not other than maybe a SLIGHTLY decreased libido which I'm cool with because mine was too high to start with.

In my opinion, SSRI's are good if you have a real biological problem. If not, they suck.

I quit taken mine about 5 weeks ago(prozac), couldn't stand the side effects of not being able to bust a fuckn nut. I feel fine now anyways, fuck that depression and anxiety bs. I'm just gonna ignore whatever n hit the gym, work out and fuckn live life.

Now since I stopped when I smoke pot I get zappy tho, kind of an electrical vertigo when I'm moving then stopping, its hard to explain. I've only been off it for 5 weeks, hopefully it goes away. It started after stopping the prozac, never experienced it before or while on it.

:feelshighman:

Yea I guess it made shit easier but life ain't a fuckn cake walk, you gotta crawl through the mud sometimes man.

This is coming from someone who HATED EVERYTHING. Not just slight depression.
