coming off an SSRI

I took a popular SSRI(lexapro) for 25 days total. It made me feel pretty good, kind of dreamy happy. But, I decided to get off it, 10 days ago. SO I have been clean since then, but just now I feel a lot of old feelings coming back. I'm just wondering how any of you have dealt with coming off of ssri's and if you think I should every try another ssri again, or a other drugs, like xanax. Because, I think that the pills really did help. But they could not last forever. I took them for 25 days, discovered a lot about myself, and life. And then I decided it was making me feel not myself, like a pill dependant, false personality. Yeah I'm done with that for now.

That's why they give you the medicine for around 6 months, not 25 days. 25 days is not enough time to get out of depression. you just masked the shit for like 2 weeks.
and I just quit taking my lexapro about ten days ago too. I haven't felt bad. course, I took mine for about 3 months before I decided to quit.

The bad thing is, I took lexapro for anxiety not for depression, and it made me happy as well as stopping my anxiety.. My anxiety is still gone, after only 25 days on the drug, but now all those happy feelings i felt are dragging me down somehow. I never used to get this way, before the drug.

Actually, I completely understand what you're saying.
I was prescribed lexapro for anxiety too. And yeah, on top of stopping my anxiety, it made me a happier person in general.
So I can understand how that might drag you down.
I can't honestly say I've been sober for a day since I quit taking my lexapro - I've been smoking pot in quite large amounts (just seemed to work out that way).. so maybe when I sober up the same thing will happen to me.
All I can tell you is to keep looking up, and that happiness is still quite accessible

I've been on lexapro for 4 months or so. I started taking it for anxiety/depression. At first it made me feel pretty weird, with dilated pupils and visuals. But after a month or two it had me feeling more like myself than I've ever felt. I've become much more social and started to realize my potential as a likeable, desirable human being, which I had always doubted in the past.
It doesnt remove me from reality, my problems are still there but Im able to cope and maintain a positive outlook for the future. Before the lexapro I had no hope for my future, didnt give a damn about my life.
I dont plan on stopping anytime soon. I dont know if my social skills and confidence will disappear if I stop taking it.
The only side effect I get is visuals. I could be developing schizophrenia or something, but Im pretty sure its just the lexapro. Either way it doesnt bother me or interfere with my ability to function normally. Plus it gives me something to do when I get bored in class.. watch the carpet flow
Maybe I am schizophrenic, I dunno. This is just my personal lexapro testimony

You have to be careful stopping SSRi's cold turkey, especially if you have been on them a good length of time. You can get some really nasty side effects, some of which are a kind of "shock" feeling that zaps your brain every so often, extreme anxiety, mood swings, paranoia, to mention a few.

An old friend offered me a bottle of lexapro for free. He's had them a while now and never found the need for them. I'm wondering... does it really (significantly) help to treat anxiety?

Oh man it's crazy reading this thread, I can totally relate to all of this
I was on lexapro 20mg for 6 months, and tapered down ofer 3 months and finally quit, and I really can't say I've been sober for more than a day since then. I smoked a lot of pot to cope with the withdrawals. Don't drink! this, for me, made the withdrawals much worse. Horrible vertigo, nausea, and inability to find pleasure in anything. blah. I'm over it now though. Let me tell you though it was a shitty three months. wow.

I have taken various SSRI's including lexapro, which I would have to say did help me out. I was on it for over 6 months probably. For me there was not much of a problem stopping it. The anxious problems that I was having seemed to go away while I was on the lexapro. This gave me time to regain confidence in myself, and once I stopped the use of the drug my confidence was still there and the problem was gone. Anyways, good luck.

Yes, it took me only a month to get most of my my anxiety gone, luckily. Thanks for all the input guys
I will deffinatly agree drinking is a bad idea, while on, or coming off lexapro. Just don't do it. You don't get as drunk, by drinking the same old amount, and when you finally realize how much you drank you are fucked.
Mat- Lexapro is pretty worthless.. a free bottle is available from any doctor. I would not recommend taking any,.
For the guy who said he feels his confidence will go AWAY when the lexapro does, I think you are wrong. But there is only one way to find out. Stop taking, and see if your anxiety is cured.

Speaking of drinking, I have been plastered and on lexapro at the same time, certainly a different type of feeling. It is hard to explain but very strange. Alcohol doesn't seem to be quite as enjoyable with lexapro.

I also noticed alcohol made me really sick when I got really drunk. SIck in the stomach... They just don't mix well. Day 11, lexapro free. Last night was just weird, this depression and bad feelings hit me out of NOWHERE I was like 'what the fuck' So I knew it had to be the lexapro.
