So I've been taking that shit for a few years now, I guess it made things better.

I watched a TED video and the women was saying that the increase in serotonin in the brain takes up the available space and limits dopamine in the brain. Then she started talking about the consequences of that.

Two of these consequences got me seriously thinking. The lack of dopamine creates apathy and anhedonia.

Apathy: a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest in or concern about emotional, social, spiritual, philosophical or physical life.

Anhedonia: defined as the inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable, e.g. hobbies, exercise, social interaction or sexual activity.

So that pretty much describes why I don't give a shit and why I don't like to do the things I used to love...

Any thought on this? Can anyone else relate to this?

It's hard to say. I'm not on SSRI's but I feel like I still have a perspective on what you've said, because IME as you grow older you naturally start to care less about things that you used to think were hugely important. Priorities change, interests change, you grow older, etc.

For example, I used to be a total sex maniac but I'm so fucking over it now. Obviously I'm still a guy and I still have the gonadal concerns, but they are far from being my highest priority. I moved on from that phase. Happens to all of us.

SSRI's have some nasty side effects but not everybody has them. I have a friend who has been on them for years and she is fully engaged and present most of the time, has an active sex life, seems pretty motivated, takes genuine pleasure from things, etc. It's not good to generalize about the effects of these drugs.

Or it could be the SSRI's ater all. Probably the only one who can find out for sure is you, by taking a break or tapering off. It couldn't hurt to find out if they're still helping you or if they're just a side-effect pill.

I hate it how people think that all their ailments can be cured by a single pill.

Oh just take this pill and you'll lose weight, you'll gain a shitload of muscle, you won't be depressed anymore...we have a solution to every problem encapsulated and sold, when the REAL solution to your shitty problems is all in your brain. It's all under your control.

Fuck anti-depressants

Dude, every post I see coming from you is totally negative. You have zero empathy and seem primarily concerned with feeding your ego with the shortcomings and misery of others.

You are not the shit. You do not have all the answers. You do not know what other people are going through. You're not qualified enough even to comment on things like this, but you're still going to act like the stream of useless insensitive garbage you just dumped on us is meaningful or important somehow, because you need it so badly to contrast with your own meaningless life.

Sorry if I just came across as a dick, but I felt somebody had to say it... :whistling:

I think you're feeling attacked when the reality is I'm not searching to feed any ego. lol I'm just giving my opinion, and your interpretation of what I'm saying is YOUR own interpretation.

I don't have any answers, I never claimed to be the shit, and tbh you're right, I don't care what other people are going through. I'm not going to feel sorry for you because you're depressed.

I'm not qualified enough to say that I watched my brother go on and off anti-depressants for a few years and all they did was make things a hell of a lot worse for him. It wasn't until he stopped taking them that he seemed to feel better

So, why don't you blow me cause honestly you DO sound like a dick and it's unwarranted.

I've been in the depths of depression, I've seriously considered suicide. Relax bro

I get that a little bit from my Zoloft, but I can still enjoy theses things. It sure beats the alternative of crushing major depression, believe me. While SSRI's do help with this, they do overprescribe them to people with minor or moderate depression.

don't you see how this is flawed? you are submitting to the depression, you are letting it control you. Even when you take anti depressants and feel OK you are still letting depression rule you.

You're looking at it saying "Ok either I'm depressed or I take this pill"...loading your brain with chemicals.

when does the point come when you stop taking them?

My friend has relentless agoraphobia and social anxiety. When I knew her in high school she'd be gone a lot of days because she'd have random panic attacks throughout the day. Therapy has failed her where medications succeed. She's getting her PhD and working for the navy ATM, she definitely would not have been able to do these things without SSRI's. She doesn't have any major side-effects, either. It seems like she actually does have a chemical imbalance which are fixed by these pills.

Again, generalizations don't serve us well, and I'd like to reiterate my original point in case it was overshadowed by my flaming,

Patlal you should take a break from the SSRI's and see how you do. It's possible they are giving you side effects when you don't need them anymore. It's also possible that you're misattributing natural changes in yourself to the pill. You're the only one who can find out for sure, because different drugs affect different people differently. As trippers, we should all know this by now.

Best of luck to ya buddy.

100% agreed, coming from someone who has also had a hard time with depression/anxiety in the past.

Everybody has a hard time with depression and anxiety, they're states of misery with which most of us are acquainted.

Some people get seriously stuck though. I was surprised by the last couple episodes of South Park because they seem to give an unusually sympathetic picture of major depression. Everything is bullshit, you can't care about anything, people watch you going through life like a zombie, your friends try to help you but they're unable to sympathize, there's no end in sight and no fucking way out that isn't pharmacological.

I don't speak from experience with major depression, but having experience with depression and anxiety is a different thing than having Major Depression. People die from Major Depression.

Indeed. I had it along with a milder form of Schizophrenia, so i got a double dose of BS. Those who say major depression isn't real have never had it.

This thread almost turned out to be a hate fest.

Some replies are worth reading though. It sucks that brain chemistry isn't an exact science. There's 100 different effect for 100 different people.

I have recently switched from effexor to a SSRI.

The SSRI is just leaving me indifferent and neutral...

I have seriously considered going pill free. I've been thinking about it for like 3 years. Never got around doing it.

I am only speaking from my own personal experience of being chronically and very severely depressed for many years.
I thought about killing myself about 10 times a day.
They put me on paxil, zoloft, zyprexa, depakote, and various other things. You name it, I've probably tried it.
They all had pretty much the same net effect. Turned me into an emotionless blob that could not reach orgasm.
They actually increased my suicidal thoughts.

In the end, I stopped taking them completely and hashed out my problems the old fashioned way. With my brain.
Granted I still suffer from some form of depression 10+ years later
But NOWHERE NEAR the debilitating level I was at before. Without pharms.

I will give that SOME people MAY benefit from moderate use of SSRIs.
But they are EXTREMELY over-prescribed and used as a band-aid to mask the symptoms rather than fix the actual problem.

Depression is a natural part of being human. A pill is not the solution to your problems 99% of the time.
Brain chemistry is a very delicate balance. We don't know how it works.
To assume that everyone can benefit from the same drugs the same way is stupid.
The human brain and human physiology is an exponentially complex system.

My advice in conquering depression? Fresh air, sunshine, exercise, meditation and a healthy and diverse diet.
Seriously, your diet is 90% of it. You are what you eat.

If you decide to take a break from the SSRIs please don't go against your doctor's advice and try to quit cold turkey.  It's doable but not worth the following weeks of withdrawals and possible resurgence of your mental state prior to taking medication.

Everyone's brain chemistry is different. Zoloft made a huge difference in my life. And, like the other poster's friend, I am pretty engaged and enjoy various things in my life. I'm certainly no emotionally stunted blob, and I have a good libido and no wish to end it all either anymore.
