Are you on SSRIs? Tell me if what I think is true.

So I've been taking that shit for a few years now, I guess it made things better.

I watched a TED video and the women was saying that the increase in serotonin in the brain takes up the available space and limits dopamine in the brain. Then she started talking about the consequences of that.

Two of these consequences got me seriously thinking. The lack of dopamine creates apathy and anhedonia.

Apathy: a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest in or concern about emotional, social, spiritual, philosophical or physical life.

Anhedonia: defined as the inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable, e.g. hobbies, exercise, social interaction or sexual activity.

So that pretty much describes why I don't give a shit and why I don't like to do the things I used to love...

Any thought on this? Can anyone else relate to this?

Link to the video so I can tell you if its pseudoscience or real science. That bit about " the increase in serotonin in the brain takes up the available space and limits dopamine in the brain" sounds kind of suspect.

In any case we don't really know for sure how antidepressants mediate their effects

SSRI's have turned my mother into an apathetic, anhedonic vegetable. It's sad. SSRI's single handedly ruined my parents marriage.

Please get off of them before it's too late..


Also, I know a young lady who has small tumors throught her spine and brain. The doctards are now saying that the tumors could have been caused by an SSRI that she was prescribed in her teens. (the SSRI she was taking is now off the market)


SSRI's, and SNRI's are fucked up drugs.

I dont have the link, I watched it a while ago. Google something like 'SSRI limits dopamine' and you get many results and studies

I've been off and on SSRIs for a while and I can relate to the feelings of apathy.  When I'm on the medication I feel indifferent to many things I care about, though for some reason I'd still rather be on the medication than not.  It's almost as if emotions begin to take on a less dynamic range and happiness doesn't feel as great though the amplitude of depression is also decreased.  It should be noted that I'm also on risperidone, which affects both serotonin and dopaminergic receptors.  However, I've felt essentially the same way on SSRIs alone.

Ah I know what the woman meant now by the serotonin taking up extra space. The high serotonin levels result in some serotonin being taken up by vesicle dopamine transporters  This means serotonin gets "packaged" in the same place as dopamine so when dopamine is released there is some serotonin released too instead of dopamine

I hate it how people think that all their ailments can be cured by a single pill.

Oh just take this pill and you'll lose weight, you'll gain a shitload of muscle, you won't be depressed anymore...we have a solution to every problem encapsulated and sold, when the REAL solution to your shitty problems is all in your brain. It's all under your control.

Fuck anti-depressants

for me it was a quick fix to my problems, only after going through the downsides of anti-depressants after a while i realized i had to deal with the shit on my own.

Apathy and adhedonia are also tell tale signs of depression. So asking if other depressed people feel like this won't give you any insight. There is no way to tell for sure if it is just depression or a sideeffect of the medicine. The only thing you could do is stop taking the meds and see if it gets better or worse.

I have one friend who particularly was never good at showing his true emotions (like many people are). He's on SSRI's now.


All i can say is, SSRI's don't expand your mind in any way shape or form and seem to be counterproductive to reaching and sort of true inner happiness. This is only from my observations though

Did you read my post? That isn't convincing enough for you? I have watched SSRI's take their toll on my mother, sister, and friends.

I was on SSRI's for a couple of years, and no, I don't recognize that at all. It also seems to me that the explanation you outline in the OP is a  gross oversimplification of a system that is so complex that nobody truly understands it, and I would mistrust it for that reason alone. Anyway, I don't know much about brain chemistry either, so I can only speak from my own experience here.

There's quite a few drawbacks to SSRI's though. They gave me stomach issues (they didn't combine well with carbonated drinks), I gained about 40lbs when I was on them and they are known to have destroyed quite a few sex lives. Although that can have a bit of an advantage too - on SSRI's, I could fuck away happily all night long and not worry about busting a load, although I could come when I wanted to. Also, the brain zaps are pretty annoying when you quit cold turkey. I don't recognize the anhedonia although my mood swings decreased in amplitude, definitely.

In the end, I decided that SSRI's weren't worth it for me and I quit them. Never looked back. I prefer cannabis to even out my moods; much more enjoyable and the side effects are way less annoying.
