cloning wild maitake\grifola frondosa
    #15121698 -

I got some luck again as I found this growing at the base of an old oak :

I am quite sure it is maitake, but it's the first time I see one 'in person'.  It does have pores underneath and follows the general description.
Anyway I will try to clone this thing.  I figured it would be better to try many ways : agar, cardboard, maybe I'll even try the 'smoothie tek'.  I will keep you posted with my successes or failures.  Of course if you have ideas or experience I'd be happy to hear them.

Sure, it's Grifola frondosa.

Your chances should be better with agar (MEA), cardboard never worked when I tried with maitake.

I have never tried with Maitake but for lots of others I have had success just wrapping a bit of the stem in dry brown paper sack or even just a paper towel and placing inside of a Ziploc and keeping in a cool place, wait for the myc to grow out of the paper and isolate growth from there.  You would be wise to try this with several scrap pieces of the base and place in different bags.  One should grow and give you nice white myc.  I would also try agar as stated as it is the best way but this has worked at times when agar plates grew too much bacteria.  Use pieces about the size of your little finger or several to make that amount.

Trout : you said to put pieces of the stem in dry brown paper, I would have assumed that it should be wet.  Did the mycelium colonise this dry substrate in your experience?

Yes, it needs to be wet for them to colonize. You can also soak cardboard, press it out then pull it apart, sandwiching the stem butts in the middle. IME G. frondosa is a slow colonizer and therefore probably won't work that well on cardboard, but its worth a shot. As Mycelio said, use agar and clone for better results.

No, it should be dry, it will absorb moisture from the mushroom and thus avoid bacterial contamination.  Just try it.

I forgot to add... Only use about 1-2 layers of paper so it can grow through quickly.  I usually just drop it down in a small paper bag crumple and shove in a ziploc and seal it up until it grows out.  I discovered this bc I stored some stems to clone and forgot about them under the seat of me car for most of the winter and I found a bag full of myc when I cleaned out my car.
