arizona and snapple drinks make my stomach hurt whats going on here?

So... i noticed several years ago snapple and arizona brand drinks make my stomach hurt.  No other brands i know of do this.  SO i was just in the store and noticed "mango madness" and i was like "its just sugar water, i'm going to get it".  I hadn't had either of those brands in awhile i think at least a year or so, so i figured maybe i was imagining it.

Drank that bottle like 7 min ago, 2 min ago, mild stabbing stomach pains and headache.

Wtf are these two companies putting in their drinks that no other company does?  wtf is going here.  Like i don't understand how i could go from feeling fine to feeling like shit because i drank what is ostensibly some sugar water. 

I drink tons of other stuff like their products without problems.

edit: if you're a doctor or whatever, i just noticed its not just my stomach hurts, its like physically tight like my muscles are contracting.  I just google searched and found like... 3 other people that said the same thing about snapple and one other person that said the same thing about arizona. 

Maybe they use some really super shitty low quality food dyes?

I get the same thing with high fructose corn syrup. I can drink cane sugar, beer, OJ or anything without a problem, but anything with too much corn syrup will give me stomach cramps. More than a 12 oz soda gives me problems.

i just drank a Arizona Raspberry Iced Tea and i'm now noticing a sort of stomach tightness right now . it's probably the splenda they use in it; that sucralose-based artificial sweetener derived from sugar seems kinda unnatural. also the high-fructose thang

i like to think that lots of water could dilute any sort of toxins in the stomach those drinks may contain

That's strange, because lipton and brisk ice tea both make me feel sick.  And they taste kinda like plastic.  But Arizona tastes awesome, and has never upset my stomach.  I drink the organic honey ginger Arizona.

Ingredients: Premium brewed organic green tea using filtered water, Organic evaporated cane juice, organic honey, ginger, organic tea essence, citric acid, vitamin C, natural flavors, and organic flavor.

I don't see anything there's that could possibly be disagreeable.  But this is the bottle in front of me now.  I don't drink the others so I don't know what's in them.  But I can't imagine they would be much different.

Some arizonas have the HFCS in em, but I'm not all that perturbed by it.

Arizonas have always treated me right.

Could be anything.  In fact thats pretty much a doublespeak mislabel, because what they mean is they added some chemical shit to mimic natural flavor.

organic tea essence  is also suspicious.

But yeah, i'm sure they don't haven't to label everything they put in.

Can't seem to find an FDA definition for "Organic Flavor" though.

And "essence" is an essential oil.  Essential oils are used very often in food.  Vanilla extract would be an example, though it's diluted with a lot of alcohol.  But "organic tea essence" is perfectly agreeable.


And yeah, nothing wrong with HFCS.  Sucrose is 50% fructose and 50% glucose.  There are two types of HFCS.  One is 55% Fructose and 42% glucose (mostly used in extremely sugary drinks), and HFCS42 which is 42% fructose and 53% glucose.  (mostly likely used in ice teas).


So you'll see, cane sugar probably has more fructose than high fructose corn syrup unless you're drinking soda, and even in that case, it's a very small margin.

yeah a bit of hyperbole on my part.  Down to the essence of it though, the "natural flavor" in your green tea could be like some rare chemical from beef or like a salt that comes from bacteria that eat garbage.  Its not like they take foods and mash them down into concentrated liquid, they get specific pure chemicals and mix them way out of context, i believe. thats my understanding.

I dont see how you guys like that shit. Way too much sugar in it. Last time i had an arizona it was the green tea kind with honey. I drank like half then threw the rest out because i felt sick. It tastes worse and worse the more i drink. And when it gets warm its really nasty.

I got the slight stomach pains like you describe.

I like making my own tea without any sugar instead.

I just can drink stuff with High fructose corn syrup. I cant even drink a whole can of soda anymore without feeling sick. There is 40.5 grams of sugar in one can of coke. Over an OUNCE of sugar in a single can of soda. Thats fucking nasty.

arizona AND snapple does this? maybe its just placebo. I've never had problems with either of these companies, I love me some arizona in the summer and some snapple. nom. You may just be allergic to something quite possibly who knows. Chances are its nothing malicious in the drink.

Yeah my guess would be you are reacting to either:

The large amounts of various sugars in these beverages.

Non-nutritive sweeteners in these beverages.

The low PH of these beverages, caused by the citric acid.

imo any beverage that you could purchase at a gas station to consume is in all likelihood complete shit and to be avoided

the one thing i noticed with snapple is that with there tea in the glass bottles about every 3rd or 4th time i buy a 6 pack they end up tasting like shit/contaminated.  Its not that they brewed it wrong or something(not that it doesn't happen as well), it flat out tastes like bacteria or something.  Once i had a bottle that had greem mold covering the entire top layer of tea, that was just gross.

Now with arizona i notice they actually leave pieces of tea leaves in there drinks, it never really bothers me but sometimes it gets annoying because i wonder if it was a tea leaf or something else that flew into my drink or something.

anyways ive never had stomach problems except maybe from snapples kiwi/strawberry lemonade and i think thats because its so dam acidic.  What does get me tho is if i drink to much water before bed ill end up with heartburn, wake up with heartburn, and have trouble eating my first meal as it burns and feels really tight.

@milkdud: Yeah, it depends on the day whether I can or can't eat sugar.  Sometimes even a small amount makes me feel like shit, and other times I can eat a slice of cake and be fine.  I don't mean one of those Amercian sized slices though. :lol:

But arizona isn't overly sweetened.  13g sugar in 8oz compared to 43g sugar in a soda.

But yeah, most of the time I make my own tea without sugar.

To all the people who don't absorb what they read on the first pass:

other high fructose/high sugar/high acidity drinks don't do this to me.

as far as i know its every flavor i've tried of arizona (6-7?)
and at least some flavors of snapple, their peach tea and lemonade definitely.  Onset of stomach pain is about 5 minutes and lasts about 10 minutes.
