Prairie Fungi
    #14695002 -

Just got back from the Western Prairie Reserve bioblitz a few days ago.  It was awesome.  This is not an area I would normally expect to find much fungi, but the conditions were primo and there were decomposers galore, as well as a few mycorrhizal and parasitic species.  We ended up with a total of 29 species of macrofungi.

All mushrooms identified by our lead, beastly mycologist.

What occurred the night we arrived

Habitat (grazed by bison, no cattle)

I'll start off with the most common ones.

Puccinia similis (rough ID).  Parasitic rust species on sage.

Marasmius oreades

Deconica coprophila

Clitocybe dealbata var. sudorifica

Slightly less common

Lepiota cf alba group

Polyporus rhizophilus.  Very cool polypore which decomposes grass rhizomes, possibly parasitic.  Widespread throughout the worlds grasslands including Asia, Eastern Europe and Venezuala (possibly).

Tulostoma cf simulans (stalked puffball).

Lyophyllum subnitens

One time finds

Crucibulum parvulum on sage

Marasmius siccus

Geastrum schmidelii

Bovista plumbea

B. plumbea tailed spores

Deconica merdaria

Amanita cf fulva.  Found associated with cottonwood (only saw a few) in a small drainage on the property.

Found on the border of the property in a Ponderosa pine outcropping.

Phallus hadriani.  Note violet eggs.

Suillus cf albidipes

Hygrophorus speciosus

Amanita vaginata group

Damn those are incredible pictures. Cool turtle too. We caught one that looked similar when we were in Wisconsin years ago. That parasitic rust pic is crazy.

Thanks for posting those. :mushroom2:

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

I'm not sure.  Arora describes it as being more of a western prairie species.  Another (I think better) name for it is Geastrum nanum.
