What Scotch would you recommend?
    #14642630 -

I've never tried scotch before and I am looking for something to break me into the scotch world.

What do you recommend?

Whatever it is, just make sure it is single malt. I usually buy Macallan or Glenfiddich.

If you're new to Scotch, you'll probably want to start with something mild and not too peaty. I came across and Auchentoshan a while ago that was very smooth and mild, and also not too expensive.

There are some very good blends out there too, but for some reason, I never come across them. For that reason, I usually settle for a not too expensive single malt. You can't go wrong with Glenfiddich as nicothoe suggested, and it has the advantage that just about any liquor parlor carries at least one variety.

With single malts, the general rule is: the older, the smoother, the costlier.

I like William Lawson's (the one I started with) also Famous Grouse which is much sweater than others. Johnny Walker is also not bad at all.

Drambuie is like a honey scotch blend of perfection...a little expense, but completely worth it.

PS: I know it says whiskey on the bottle, but this shit is scotch.  Without a doubt.

I get Dalmore on those rare occasions when I drink strong booze. Another great single malt from the motherland of Scotch.

What did you think? It is customary to cut scotch with water. A splash or a couple ice cubes... It opens up the aroma and flavors. The cold makes it 100x smoother too.

Glenfiddich 12 is alright. Nothing special, but it's a drinkable single malt. It never really wow'ed me, but it holds a special place as the first scotch I ever tried.
Out of the widely available scotches, I would've picked Glenlivet 12.

If you have a nice liquor store nearby, there's also Glenmorangie 10 (would've been my recommend) or Cardhu 12... Affordable and delicious.

Not even getting into the peaty scotches. (Definitely try a 50mL bottle before you buy a fifth of Laphroaig.)

I used to drink Macallan 12 and Highland Park 12. Both excellent, but they're gonna run $40-50 a fifth.
And Talisker's even more. Though I've heard it's excellent.
