Anyone here got experience with using Xylitol or Erythritol as a sugar replacement? Stevia anyone?

XYLITOL - 2/3 the calories of sugar. Promotes calcium uptake, bone density and dental remineralization, effective vs many bacterial infections, in the mouth cavity or systemic. 1/10 the laxative efect of sorbitol

ERYTHRITOL - 1/20 the calories of sugar, 2/3 of the sweetness. some antibacterial effects in the mouth cavity, tooth friendly, no laxative effect, acts as a mild diuretic.

Quite healthy, you can buy these in multi-pound bags for not too much money, health benefits are optimum at about a heaping teaspoon per day (4-10gr)

STEVIA - highly potent noncaloric sweetener derived from a plant. No real health benefits, other than cutting sugar.

Anyone got experience? I'm especially interested in experiences with the above 2 sugar alcohols. Does it taste well? Is it really side effects free in normal dosage?

You cant get the benefits from gum, this is for people who use Xylitol and Erythritol powder in food prepn.

Cut out sugar and don't replace it if you are worried about it. I canned sugar a while back and feel great.

I know some one who has kept a stevia plant for years. proper care and they don't die indoors.... Xylotal comes from birch trees... you've probably had some as it is in all kinds of chewing gum...

I always use honey whenever I cook instead of refined, granulated sugars. Honey is also a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal so it is healthy for you too.

I wonder if I had Xylitol before though. When I was in Japan, I always chewed this mint gum that went by the brand name "Xylitol." I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I wonder if that's what they actually used.

How are you by the way, Wiccan_Seeker? I haven't seen you in forever. I linked so many people to your MSG to GHB synthesis TEK over these past few years, it's not even funny lol.

That's ridiculous. All sugar alcohols do is cause gas. I ate some xylitol ice cream a few weeks ago. Even if they are good for you, it's like all the way on the bottom of the scale. There are far more important health things to worry about. For a sugar alternative, choose something that tastes good and doesn't cause gas: stevia. I prefer the pure stevia in alcohol (to help with solubility).

Not that necessarily ALL of them are bad for you, but in general I don't trust artificial sweeteners. At least go with something natural. If you want my real opinion, just stick with sugar/honey and cut down gradually, not even to zero, a bit is fine and energizing. They may be bad in high amounts but they've withstood the test of time at reasonable doses. Some of the possible health concerns of the artificial shit aren't even detectable until it's too late. Exercise > diet when it comes to weight loss, BTW. Good luck, whatever you choose. :cheers:

They're definitely not nearly as sketch as say, aspartame, but I would still watch it carefully. Reading up on it, xylitol does seem pretty legit...but then again, it has 2/3 of the calories of sugar, so it ain't some miracle shit like the no calorie sweeteners. :dead: Ya know what they say about stuff that sounds too good to be true...

Oh yeah, some of them are sweet but taste nothing like sugar, much worse usually. Might be wise to do a taste test before ordering any bulk powders.

Erythritol is probably safer than sucrose. The real problem with sucrose isn't the calories but the way the body has to process it.

I've been using erythritol, in the form of Truvia, in my coffee and tea. I like the unique taste it has and the slight cooling effect it has in the mouth. I prefer the taste of Truvia to table sugar in drinks. Though, baked goods and the such don't taste quite right when using sugar alcohols.

I've tried pure stevia extracts (liquid and powder) and do not like the odd licorice-like taste it produces.

Splenda contains sucralose, which is trichlorosucrose. It cleaves partially into a chloroglucose and a dichlorofructose.

As a chemist that gives me bad vibes. Many many processes in the body utilize glucose and some of those may jam shut because of chloroglucose.

It screams NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION to me no matter how much the FDA harps on its safety.

I tried it and the taste is the best of the artificial sweeteners, but personally, I rather use half refined cane sugar than splenda.

While I haven't tried the others, stevia is the shit.  You gotta add that shit in real slow. Can easily be overpoweringly too sweet.

Update:

Just got a pound pack of Xylitol. It basically looks like sugar except the crystals glisten like its meth.

I put some in my mouth pure, several times, it is a bit weaker in sweetness than sugar, the taste is a bit cooling as the Xy dissolves, but all around I couldnt escape the notion I was putting pinches of pure sugar in my mouth.

Aftertaste is very mild, negligable.

Xylitol can replace sugar 1:1, no doubt in my mind.

Great stuff!
