Illegal Synthetic Drugs Found at Area Retailers

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office discovered some area gas stations were still selling the recently banned K2, Spice and other research chemicals.

No arrests were made, but the items were confiscated and the retailers were educated further.

Sheriff’s officers found four retailers in unincorporated areas selling the illegal synthetic drugs as they were visiting retailers to educate them about the ban on April 13.

“Most of the retailers were unaware of the ban,” said Sgt. John Koziol of the sheriff's office. “Our purpose was to educate the establishments. This all stems from when one of our officers was making a purchase and saw the stuff on the counter. We realized that maybe there wasn’t enough knowledge, so let’s educate the public before we make arrests.”

Under the Illinois Controlled Substance Act, as of Jan. 1, 2011, any person found in possession of K2 or Spice could be charged with a Class 4 felony. Any person selling the synthetic drugs could be charged with a minimum of a Class 2 felony.

Koziol said the majority of the establishments selling the substance were in southern McHenry County. He said use of the substance has been a problem in area high schools for the last five or six years. Koziol said local police departments were also helping to educate retailers about the ban.

The synthetic drugs gained popularity in recent years because it is commonly believed that these drugs are not banned and do not produce harmful effects, which is not the case, according to a press release from McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren.

K2 and Spice are marketed as synthetic cannabis and produce an effect similar to using marijuana. Other synthetic drugs, 2CE, 2CB, 2CT2, and mephedrone are being abused, as well, and produce an effect similar to LSD, MDMA and amphetamines.

There are no studies on the long-term effects of these substances.

The sheriff’s office warns that some products may not contain the specific chemical compounds of K2 or Spice, but produce the same physiological effects. These are considered analogs of the banned K2 and Spice and are illegal.

Manufacturers of these synthetic drugs are continuously creating new products and names, which may be confusing to retailers, the press release explained.

That is so fucked that that didnt get in trouble. I caught a felony case in Illinois for overdosing on H. An ambulance was called to my house because I was unresponsive, and they sent a cop because it was drug related. Empty needle, and the spoon to go along with it had residue being enough in Illinois to catch a felony. the fucking pigs just prolly let a gas station owning terrorist away with a warning. Must be a frequent stop for a free cup of coffee. Fuck cops man. How are no citations issued in a FELONY case?  Another reason I wouldnt stop to piss on a cops head if it were on fire. I would, however take some video of the piece of shit so I could post it on youtube and watch everyone cheer.

Yea I agree I think it's bullshit they should get in trouble. They are profiting off of selling an illegal drug and even though I don't agree with it being illegal the fact they would allow them to get away with it is bullshit. If any normal person gets caught with an illegal drug saying they didn't know it was illegal isn't going to get them out of trouble.

They should be held responsible for what they are deciding to put in there shop. It's there fault they didn't do more research into what they were going to sell.

Yah but what if they have new blends that dont have the DEA 5 banned Synthetics than it is legal.  I wonder how many really where trying to sell old Incense from 4 months ago?

ive seen it! there is a convinience store here in MI, which the name of which i wont mention sells K2 among other legal "incense" which clearly states that they are FDA compliment and go on to list a series of syntherics that are not in the "Incense" not mean for human consumption. but they also sell regular K2, K2 XXX, and one more i think. that are not labeled and even if they were K2 has been outlawed anyway...to me they might as well be selling weed its crazy

If they are selling the blends that don't have the illegal substances in it that's a whole different story all together. In that case the informed shop owner can inform the police of that and not have there incense taken from them. However clearly they really didn't know anything about what they were selling, and when you choose to try to make money in a legal gray area that RC's are you should make damn sure you know exactly what is inside the blend.

i think these guys have an idea but think its too much like the legal shit they are selling in the basket next to it to get in trouble...im sure they will get caught eventually
