Plan to Take the Strain off the Server

We all may know that the server is under a lot of pressure. Whether its the number of users online at one time, the number of users that are part of the Shroomery, or just the amount of redundant threads and stupid threads. Notice forums like OTD which have a total of 79.670499909556720472955668465384% of the total posts in the Shroomery. Then look at the point of the Shroomery. Many of these people are missing the point of it, why it was created. There are many boards out there for stupidity, although I'll admit, I like to have fun. But its the people who put the "stupid" in stupidity by cutting down others, and making completely pointless posts. We should consider some type of quota that limits the amount of posts in OTD per day or per person per day. Or maybe something along the lines of not allowing users to have more than a certain percentage of their posts in OTD. Its not just OTD though, its also the fact that deleted threads still physically exist, but theyre just edited to say deleted. Some feature should be implimented to completely delete these threads as one would delete a reply from a post. The following is a poll for what the members of the Shroomery think we should do to OTD:


What to do to OTD?
Enact a quota on total limit of posts in OTD per day.
Enact a quota on total posts per person per day.
Enact a quota limiting a user to having only a certain percentage of their posts in OTD.
Delete it.
Leave it alone.



The reason for me doing this is the constant problems with the shroomery, I have a server and I'm aware how much memory and SCSI drives cost. This isn't in reference to all the users, rather those who abuse the privileges of being a member of this board. Respect it, and keep in mind that its a privilege to be a be a member of this community, and someone has to pay for the costs of keeping it up. SOMEONE has to maintain it, and spend their time maintaining it.

This is really retarded. I think the answer is to delete anyone account who says stuff on the level of ultra retardation. OTD seems to be a cornerstone of the community for many people so simply getting rid of it is not a solution. The solution to this problem lies in everyones hands and you cant find a median then you need to get a life.

Amen to that. Also note that after 100 votes, opinions following the 100th vote won't matter. This gives ample time for everyone to give their opinions. Also, since the technology isn't available for the quotas, violators of ANY rules should have their accounts and posts deleted.

i've been saying for awhile that the flood control should be changed so that you can only post in OTD once every 5 minutes.

The resources aren't being bothered that much by posts in OTD, its more to do with searches since they eat up a lot of the server's resources.

It?s both really.
The immense amount of total posts on the board posts makes the search take a long time which slows the server.

Wouldn't it be possible to exclude OTD posts from the search?
Or maybe to keep posts only for 1 month?

You can?t. All of the posts are in one database, and if you search the whole database is used.

I second that. How often do we really look at the posts that are years old in OTD? Not very often, if not, never.
It's not just the OTD with heaps of pointless posts, but sometimes in General Questions were people ask the exact same thing over and over, and there's now about 200 posts (not an accurate number here) on "Can you smoke shrooms?"

I've always said that we should have the threads in OTD expire after a certain amount of time. If there are some threads that we don't want to lose then they can be flagged and put into some kind of OTD archive. I see nothing wrong with this.

I think we need to appoint a "blue ribbon" committee to look into this matter, and then issue a position paper. A position paper that is both fair and flexible, and is both forward looking and respectful of the past and tradition. I think we should also make a ethnographic cultural survey, so that the needs of ALL shroomerites are met both fairly and with much vigor and unbridled enthusiasm. I think we may also need to pass a Bond Issue to raise the funds for this committee and these studies. I?ll develop a plan and get back to you all...
