Getting hands on Volvariella volvacaea!
    #1404937 - 03/24/03 04:17 AM (21 years, 29 days ago)

I was long thinking about how I?d get the spores of this species, and today I see this asian mixed mushrooms in the supermarket,

and among them Volvariella volvacaea!

Now I?m gona try and bring those gills to germinate on agar. Hopefully I can get a culture not contaminated with the spores of the other mushrooms....

I hope you'll make it. Good luck!

I thought that you already have this species, it must be hard to keep since you can't use cold storage.

I do, I do, but I tried to fruit it unsucessfully and then I read that it degenerates very fast.
So I?m trying it now from spores.

Here is the old culture, transfered to gelatine(!) agar 6 days ago:

And now the good news, the transfered gills are showing growth on PDYA after 3 days!

mmm. very tasty but yields are low even with early isolates - and as you've said they degenerate fast.
We actually have a few similar related wild species in Australia

I tried this a year ago with no luck - heaps of moulds

I read that spore germ is highest at around 40 degress C

Looking at what youve done i think ill try again

Ive been able to get my hands on this species and some aussie natives, and the taste itself is quite poor.
Ive seen these used often in thai cooking like tom yum goong, and they are pretty yucky.
They do degenerate quite quickly so spores are the way to go.

Not really...

I didn?t manage to cultivate it in the summer, and now it?s too cold.
