SWIM, great video. Definitely got me to look at youtube in a way I never had. Kind of over-optimistic though, in my opinion.

Just the other day I saw one with Douglas Rushkoff from the same conference.

When I have no intention to post, and thus no stake in the game, it becomes appallingly obvious what a pissing match most threads are, here as well as on other forums.

For the most part, we're not here to learn from each other. We're here to hit "refresh" until something juicy comes up that we can jump on.

Egoistic competition permeates all forums, true enough.  Not everyone succumbs to it, though, or at least not all the time.  Do you think online conversations exhibit more ego than real life conversations?

It's hard to generalize either, but I think it's easier to generalize forums. There are a huge number of variables controlling ego expression in real conversation, in the various chaotic situations of the world. The internet kind of smooths all that out, at least to a large extent. It's a much more controlled environment, with much less risk.

But I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen someone more egomanic in real life than I have on the internet. I'd say every bit of douchebaggery I've ever witnessed in person has been matched or exceeded by people I've talked to online.

Then again, it's also quite possible that I've encountered more people online (however briefly) than I ever have in real life. And the human brain is good at remembering highlights, bad at calculating averages.

In general, I'd say this: people in real life will surprise you. People online won't. Maybe all the internet does is cut off the extremes in the human spectrum (since in a text-only medium, real altruism and real aggression are both impossible), bringing us all closer to "the average man" -- who is, apparently, kind of a dick.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here already, but I think all this assholery we see on the internet is due to the degree of anonymity granted.

I mean, if you would have to back everything you say online with the representation of your actual identity, you'd think twice about trolling, wouldn't you?

That's why I think that due to anonymity, the social behavior on internet forums is not an accurate image of the real world, but in fact a very distorted one.

I come to the shroomery for the same reason I watch Jersey Shore.....to hopefully witness a train wreck you cant look away from. :shrug: sorry but its true, Im human, and life can get mundane.
