black holes exist in high numbers throughout our universe. black holes are not actually "holes" however, as they are dense matter with gravity so strong that not even light cannot escape. light is obscured once the object reaches the "event horizon", and is plunged beneath like its nothing.
then, there are quasars. supermassive black holes. these freaks of nature are billions, i repeat, billions times larger than our sun. (the largest black hole so weighs in at 18 billion solar masses!) they are pulling in billions of stars and swallowing them up like a horny bitch at the beach. huge clusters of energy are being sucked away. and there are millions of these quasars.
one thing scientists noticed, however, was that some galaxies have a "jet" of energy streaming hundreds of thousands of millions of light years away. scientists found that the source of these energy "jets" are in fact the final outcries of stars and energy before being ripped apart. the amount of energy it takes to form a stream of energy like that is incomprehensible.
it is easy to call black holes monsters. they play a fearsome role in nature. however, black holes may be a necessary evil.
these "energy jets" i mentioned earlier have been found to power other galaxies, feeding them enough energy to make stars, which in turn makes planets, then life. as it turns out, these black holes are actually distributing stars. as they are sucking in stars, the outbursts of energy are creating new stars.
but it doesn't end there. we all know the universe is expanding, at an exponential rate supposedly. the consequence of this expansion is the seperation of matter. as the universe expands, matter becomes farther apart. at a certain point, the universe is supposed to become so large that matter ceases to function - the atoms are simply too far apart, the universe is too big etc... however, these supermassive black holes are in fact bringing space and time together. more and more energy is being pulled in to the black hole, bringing matter closer. black holes are essentially unifying space and time.
to me, the black hole is the icon of existence itself - the cycle of life and death. it seems no matter where we are in the universe, the rules are the same: to live, to reproduce, to die, rinse, repeat. a black hole is the identity of the universe, which is us, bringing in and bringing out. constantly. endlessly.
now that's a thought.
