Went to the dentist today for the first time in 4-5 years
    #13616706 -

Apparently I have a cracked tooth and have to get a crown, as well as a wisdom tooth removed.  They also recommended I get an implant for a tooth that's been missing for 8 years or so as the result of a botched root canal.

It's gonna cost a ton, and I have no dental insurance.  And I'm moving out of the country in late January, so I have to do all of this soon.  Blah.  I'm in a shit mood.  I suppose it could be worse, though.  It's just very depressing at times to grow older.  It's one thing to know that your body is going to start changing and breaking down as you age, and another thing to actually experience it.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Get your local dental insurance for poor non-covered people.  Thats what I do.

I think ours is Carrington(?), its cheap (subsidized by the state) - you can start and stop it just for your procedure.

Good luck. I recently went to the dentist too, however my prospects are a bit more grim.
I have 2 completely cracked (in half) top incisors, 2 broken molars, and 3 missing.
Mostly due to my own negligence, and waiting years too long to get my wisdom teeth pulled (because I didn't have dental insurance either), they were severely impacted and crowded my other teeth and caused some major damage, had to get 3 molars pulled over a couple years because they were so damaged and got infected.
That dental procedure alone, just pulling the wisdom teeth ended up costing me 3k.

Well I went to the dentist recently to get an exam, and they are quoting me (without insurance), about $14,000 to fix my teeth.
I'm looking at veneers, several implants, a couple crowns.. some major work
Luckily my full coverage dental plan kicks in soon at work here, but even with the insurance, I'm still going to be paying that for a long time..
I've looked at all the alternatives, dental schools, pro-bono dentists etc.. there's usually either a 1yr waiting list or you have to pay everything up front, I might end up going to the USC dental school to get some of my work done at a discount.... but from what I've heard it takes fucking FOREVER, since it's a school environment and a procedure than normally takes 30 mins takes about 3-4 hours there. I might just end up going to tijuana to get some cheap dental work, then get the real dentist for the critical stuff like implants.

Its gonna cost me a bomb too man - they charge $400 here just to put u on the books admin fee if you don't regularly visit - which I don't :-(

I need to do the same and am shopping around for insurance which I will
be looking to get after the holidays. I have a handful of cavities and need
4 wisdom teeth pulled. I have one missing tooth but it still has the root in there
somewhere. Shit is rough man. But its pretty much our own fault.

No, I blame the dentist for informing me of the condition.  :crankey: Ignorance is bliss.

DieCommie, thanks for the advice, I'm definitely going to look into that kind of insurance.

MadSeasonAbove, nice1, DeadHearts, and Shroomism:  Thanks for commiserating, I hope you are all able to get the work done that you need, and declare victory in the War on Teeth.

Fuuuuck I've been putting off going to the dentist for sooo long. The last few weeks it's really been on my mind too because a tooth has turned pretty sensitive, and that's never a good thing

And yeah I brush my teeth twice a day, and occasionally floss. My diet doesn't have much sugar and no soda. I get monsters a couple times a week and I can feel that shit eating away at me every time but otherwise nothing much is attacking my teeth. Sometimes cavities happen, that's why teeth fall out haha.

The UCLA dentistry school isn't any better. Don't waste your time checking it out. Full of medical people and 5 hour waits for x-rays.

I take pretty good care of my teeth. They're whiter than most peoples, but they're still fucked up. I'm in the same position as some of these other guys. I don't have dental insurance so I haven't been to the dentist in 6 years or so. The last time I was at a dentist my wisdom teeth were coming in and I wanted to get them removed b/c my teeth were starting to move. Instead the jackass sent me to and orthodontist who told me I should get braces.

Pisses me right off because I care a lot about my teeth, but I'll probably need a few things done. At least I'll have insurance come January.
