How Should I Drive Home -- Seattle, WA to Marquette, MI?

Hi, I'm about to leave Seattle and head to Marquette, MI. I was just wondering if anyone in the Seattle area has ever taken an eastbound road trip in the winter.

Mapquest is directing me through Washington and Idaho via I-90. Then to hook up with I-94 in central Montana and take it through N. Dakota. Then US-10 and MN-210 through Minnesota. Then US-2 through Wisconsin and US-41 through Michigan.

My question is, is this a safe route to take in the winter? I'm driving a small car with front wheel drive and could buy tire chains if neccessary. I know it's pretty mountainous in Washington, Idaho and Montana but Mapquest doesn't say how many passes I'll have to go over. Are there a lot of them? Are they pretty bad or is this a routine drive that people make?

Any additional thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Ask the locals at a gas station or store.
I don't live up there(so.Oregon) but a pretty cold storm is a brewing in the PNW... maybe not that far north but be prepared heading east. There might not be big passes ?? but the high desert area of easter Oregon and Washington is not a place you want to get stuck

Don't buy chains, buy cables. Bring extra food and water.

Probably the worst spot you'll hit is fourth of july pass on I-90 coming out of coeur d'alene - I drove a lot of the I-90 segment from Montana to Washington last night around midnight and the roads were pretty well taken care of.

This is true. I live right on I-90 in MT... Lookout Pass on the MT/ID border is usually not too bad, but its storming pretty harsh right now, so be careful on all the passes.

Once you go over the divide and out on to the plains you can still have blowing snow and low visibility, but that won't be any different no matter which route you take.

Your other option would be to stay on 90 all the way to MN going through South Dakota. Just depends on where the weather is at.

Thanks guys. What is the difference between chains and cables?

Does this trip seem reasonable or should I try to pick a more southern route?

Well with this storm coming in it is kind of a bad timing thing. I don't think any other route would be safer unless you drive down the coast all the way down towards southern California.Mountains man they are everywhere.

I talked to my wife who used to drive and or live in the washington area dealing with eastward drives and it sounds like the roads should be taken care of.

Cables are cheaper lighter and easier to install. Just don't forget that rubber stretchy thing with hooks on each end that they sell next to the cables. Basically a 1 foot rubber band with a hook on each side to tighten the cables..

Chains work fine but your drive on them will suck. Instead of a rattle from the small cables you will have a thump thump thump of the chains.

I think I spent 20 bucks at a store for cables and another couple bucks for the rubber bungee cord tensioner thing.
