Moving to Austin, Texas

I'm planning on moving from Houston to Austin within the next month or two. I graduated college recently and have been going on interviews up there.... Hope to get a call back soon. I want to make the move regardless of if I have a job or not but I thought I'd bounce a few questions off you shroomerites first.

How much money should I have saved up?

Do you think it'll be difficult to find decent employment?

Should I get my own place or room with some random people? Anybody got an open room...?

What are your favorite chill spots up there? I've been to Barton springs, hamiltons pool and the greenbelts.... You got anything more obscure but still awesome?

Any other comments or suggestions?

More info: I've got business degrees, reliable transportation, and a good resume
Plus I love smoking herb, playing the blues, practicing mycology and reading/talking about cutting edge issues and ideas

Austin is pretty expensive to live in by yourself so I would highly suggest a roommate or 2. With 2 roommates you could live at a very nice apartment complex for fairly decent rent. The transportation system is excellent one of the best in the State so you don't really need a car or if you got one you can save some gas if your tight on cash. UT students ride free else you got to pay a dollar (not too bad). Shit load of traffic from 7-9a.m. and from 5-7p.m. but coming from Houston im sure your used to that...hmm what else there are so many awesome places to chill in Austin especially if your in to live music.

Look to paying 600+ a month rent if you decide to live solo

cost of living isn't crazy high, and austin is one of the easiest places in the country right now to find a job.
rosebud and commons ford are absolutely beautiful BUT the water is super cold. definitely go down 6th street and the drag but beware of dragrats.

Looks like I landed a position at a company I was really interested in, and I've got a final phone interview with the CEO on Thursday.

Dude Austin kicks ass. I was just in Houston last weekend and couldn't believe how few hot single women were there. Fuck getting an apartment by 6th though, it will cost a fortune. You can live 10min away for a third of the price.

The traffic is pretty shitty now that every goddam web article is encouraging people to move here. The city is too small for the population and the roads have no room to grow. Other than that, jobs are fairly easy to come by, and the nightlife is just the tits.

Do you mind me asking what company you're interviewing with?

Yeah I agree I think there is just too many people in Austin the traffic is really bad for the size of the city....there really is only I-35 and Mopac to travel around and both get backed up really bad. The women in Austin are beautiful for sure and being a college town most people are fairly smart.

They're called Clean Edison and they provide training for sustainable design in architecture. They haven't actually opened in Austin yet so I'll be getting into sales on the ground floor. I don't even care if it doesn't work out long term.... This job is my reason to get up there. I've been to Austin hundreds of times and it's definitely the place for me, much more so than flat and humid Houston...

if i were you id find a place with a few other roommates.. craigslist room share ads are great.

if you find a place that doesnt seem too shady and is willing to let you in month-to-month that might be ideal just until you know your way around and can find a place you would actually want to live in..

also, roommates can show you parts of the city youve never heard of before. good way to meet people too.

I was thinking about moving to north Austin cause I've got some friends up there and it wouldn't be too far from work. SoCo is pretty badass tho.... Or were you talking farther south like Buda

Ive never been to San Fran so i cant say for sure, but it certainly is a liberal oasis in a giant conservative shit hole. Nah thats not true... I've lived in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio and they all have their own kind of charm. But if you're going to live in Texas then Austin is the place to be.

Hmmm, do you have a background in architectural design? I've done sales my whole life, let me know if it's a decent gig, I gotta come out of my temp retirement early next year.

I pay $815/mo for a nice sized 2br/2bth by Parmer and Mopac, washer and dryer included. North Austin is starting to get some hot spots for nightlife and entertainment, it's much better than it was even two years ago. And, if you make a point to live by Mopac, you never have to touch 35 and everything is < 30min away.

Been to Austin several times for shows and/or parties.  Sixth Street's cool but I could see how it might get old after a while.  There are lots of shows.  I just saw Deadmau5 at Austin Music Hall this past October.  Between San Antonio and Austin pretty much every musician stops at one of these two cities, which is tiiiiiiits.  Austin has some good head shops too.

I liked north Austin a lot better when I lived in Austin...not too far away from downtown so that you still have the nightlife, but still far enough away for some additional quiet space. I lived around Parmer/Braker.  Not too far away there is a beautiful wooded park (called Walnut Creek) with a big creek running through and some cliffs that we used to take our dog to, and ride bikes at.

:sunny:  Keep Austin Weird!  I loved Lake Travis and Hippie Hollow.  I lived in Austin for 5+ years before I moved to the Boston area, then Dallas area, then San Diego...now back to the Dallas area on a temporary basis before I move again.  :weirdeyes:

Did you really??  So cool.  I spent lots of acid trips in that park, just wandering around, sitting by the creek. 

And I've been meaning to get into Amtgard for a looong time, ever since I heard about it.  There's a kid I met awhile back in Dallas that was way into it.  Thanks for the reminder.

I was just there smoking a bowl last week! I used to have swim meets at the pool there, hadn't been in a decade until I went to smoke with a friend. I was upset by all the trash people had littered around, but its still a beautiful place.
