i think a big reason that marriage is a dismal failure in the west is because of the shit the media throws at us. we aren't taught to deal with ourselves on a human level, therefore can't create and hold onto meaningful relationships. its just my guess but i think people in the east are much happier with themselves as people, regardless of how little material resource they have, and can in turn actually love another. some may argue that they have religious or cultural convictions which bind married couples for life in those parts, but i'd beg to differ.
