Henry Rollins on selling out

TheKickingTree's post about Rollins made me think to post this.  I thought it deserved it's own thread because this is really about Henry's opinion on selling out.  He actually makes some good points.  I'm still don't agree with him 100% about this, but I thought I'd get your opinions on it.

I don't really give a shit if they put music in commercials. To me, that's not really selling out.

Selling out is when you start writing music so that it will be more lucrative for you. When the focus of the music is no longer art, but money. It doesn't change the artistic integrity of the song for it to be in a commercial if when it was created it was created with sincerity.

I don't know, I agree in some respects but his argument isn't air tight. Especially coming out of the punk rock scene a big aspect of that is anti-corporatism and anti-materialism so in many ways it does compromise your integrity. I don't think it's all black and white though. For example there may be a product/service you feel strongly about. Perhaps something that helps the environment, a philanthropic cause, a movie that actually captures the emotions of your music, or maybe just an upstart company that makes shit you actually like and use. But the argument for selling a song to Coke or Chevy or Budweiser is a pretty fucking weak one. I am not a product and these corporations do not represent my interests. If you want a paycheck then just say it, but don't try and form your own rationalization for allowing your music to be applied arbitrarily to some product you couldn't care less about. That's bogus.

Well said.  My personal opinion on the matter is that there are some groups that can sell their music and some groups that can not.  If your band and your music stood for something really important to the world, then you can not sell your music.  For instance, the Beatles song "Revolution".  This song was an anthem for a generation of kids who wanted to change the soul of the world from fear to love.  It's sacrosanct.  But either Michael Jackson or Yoko or someone allowed Nike to use it for a sneaker ad.  This clip is like watching the twin towers fall for me.  We should still look for Bin Laden, but we need to find the people responsible for this atrocity first.
