Bow down, it's ____'s birthday!!

I can't decide if I'm out of line or not. I am in college and live in a house with 3 other dudes. One of my roommate's birthday is today (Tuesday). Personally, I can't stand noise when I'm trying to sleep, and sometimes I go to bed rather early by 2 of my roommates' standards ( like midnight or so). Last night, to celebrate his turning 21, he went to the bar at midnight. This was fine with me, because I thought he would come home and just go to bed and we could all celebrate today, on the DAY of his birthday. This did not happen.

Granted, crazier shit has happened, but he came home at bar closing time around 2 am with 4 other people. These are not quiet people. I live in the upstairs at our house, but it's an extremely old house with hardwood floors, so sound travels well. (I could hear conversations over the movie I had playing that was supposed to drown them out.) This woke me up, and I was immediately fucking heated. I laid there for about 5 minutes before I decided to text the birthday boy and ask him to please shut his guests up because they are loud. Apparently my other roommate texted him at exactly the same time and the birthday boy went off. So, the 3 of us *other* roommates go into the kitchen to see what's going on. Birthday boy cursed me for my polite request, and proceeded to give Jeff and I the third degree. He seems to think that there are >3 celebrations/birthday, one at midnight on tuesday, one tuesday night, on friday or saturday for his 21 shots, etc.

Honestly, I have no problem with people celebrating birthdays, but this is excessive. If it interferes with my life in a way that I would never interfere with yours, then there is something wrong with that.

Why is this "Holier than thou" attitude so contagious? It seems that when one person hangs out with a narcissist for long enough, the narcissism multiplies.

it's one day of the year, and it's his 21st. i'd say that kind of behavior is to be expected tbh. you guys should have had a conversation before he went out about that stuff.

i mean yeah he was kind of a dick, but you're over reacting just a little bit too.

Yeah I hate the OMG ITS MY BIRFDAY shit.  My roommate last year almost through a fucking hissyfit because I wanted to go to a show that happened to be on his birthday.  This year I actually missed a show I really wanted to go to because of that.  And if I'd had my druthers, I would have gone to the show.  But I bowed to societal pressure cause he was having a big party.

But basically fuck that shit, I wish I didn't even know how old I was.

As for your situation, your roommate sounds like an asshole but sometimes you just have to put up with that stuff.  He should have asked beforehand if he could bring people back, birthday =/= free pass for anything you feel like.

Overall, it sounds pretty reasonable, except the part where he cursed you out.  He just turned 21, and is finally allowed to go out to the bars.  He's pretty pumped, I think it's fair you give him the one day.  If he wants to do this on two week nights in a row, that's excessive (if it interferes with your sleep schedule).  If you politely ask him to keep it down, as well as another one of your housemates, and he not only ignores you but yell at you, he's being an asshole.

Over my years of being in uni, I've found the two most important parts of finding compatible housemates: similar sleep schedules, followed by similar levels of cleanliness.  As long you guys are on the same page about those things, even if you're not the best of friends, it tends to work out.  Sounds like you guys unfortunately are not on the same page at all about that.

It's a shitty situation - you probably should've expected that to be honest, but he had no right to go cursing you out after he woke you up, and I'm sure he could've brought the volume down somewhat at your AND your housemates' requests.
