Rush Limbaugh Tricked by Wikipedia Pranksters
    #13210528 -

Imagine all of the other bullshit, fudged data, numbers, and quotes we hear on the radio, CNN, FOX, and other media outlets that only appear legitimate due to its origin being perceived as a position of authority.

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/features/view/feature/Rush-Limbaugh-Tricked-by-Wikipedia-2081

"Rush Limbaugh has at least this much in common with college professors: like them, he has avoided endorsing Wikipedia. As Gawker pointed out, on his radio show last fall the host asserted, "everybody in the world knows you don't believe anything on Wikipedia because anybody can go in there and put anything on that they want to." It turns out that Rush succumbed to the charms of the online encyclopedia this Tuesday, however, as he quoted liberally from an apparently doctored wiki-page about Judge Vinson, a judge on the Federal District Court in Pensacola, Florida, who he described in unflattering terms.

The New York Time's Kevin Sack reports that Rush, "informed his listeners that the judge was an avid hunter and amateur taxidermist who once killed three brown bears and mounted their heads over his courtroom door to 'instill the fear of God into the accused.'" In fact, nearly all the information that he quoted from the Wikipedia page was falsified by "pranksters" who doctored a supposed Pensacola News Journal article which actually does not exist."

As far as wikipedia is concerned, if the research or a statement is cited (and much of them are), then the actual article or journal should be consulted for reliability.

If the claim isn't cited, or isn't at least referenced with who said what, why, when, and where -- then it's anybody's guess how accurate it is.

With that said, people who incessantly dispute any info because it comes from a wiki are a bit stubborn.

Kneejerk disputing is dumb as is kneejerk citing.

Wikipedia can be useful but assholes are doing their best to wreck it.  What a surprise that if you let anybody post a certain percent will be douches.  Kinda like walking down the street.

The very philosophy of Wikipedia hinges on the assumption that an open-source information database is possible. If once it is truly open to public input and it still turns to shit, then the original idea must be re-evaluated. If we reserve all data as subject to verification from staff, then it differs little from other peer groups.

I suppose you can pre-screen for sincerity or co-operation, but some minorities sincerely want to sneak in the back door and corrupt operations for the sake of corruption.

I think it's good that people fuck with Wikipedia entries.  Take Maurice Jarre, the French composer: in the wake of his passing, someone posted some really poetic quote about his philosophy of life, which was run by something like 20 major news sources.  It turned out to have been fabricated as a media experiment.  The media failed.  This kind of forgery keeps journalists honest: if you're getting paid to report the facts, do your damn homework.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Limbaugh made the same mistake that all(most?) of us have at one time or another. He took something at face value. That it furthered his own agenda leads one to suspect he was only too happy to regurgitate it without fact-checking, whereas if it had run counter to what he "knew" he would have undoubtedly bashed it without knowing all(any?)of the facts.

Thank goodness we can trust celebrities to be responsible and know what they're taking about before they open their yaps in the public forum.:crazy2:
