Has anybody read any books on this phenomenon? I am looking for a first-person account. I have a very limited idea of who they were and of some of the parties involved such as Ginsberg, but I would really like to know a lot more.
Any input appreciated

It's an excellent book and will give you a much better idea of who they were
I have always thought that the Kool-Aid tests they had were like the first raves

I would read "Storming Heaven: LSD And The American Dream" by Jay Stevens. It's a fantastic book. I question how accurate "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" is. I'm pretty sure that it's Tom Wolfe who started the myth that Leary and Kesey never met when the Pranksters showed up at Millbrook where Leary lived at the time. It's been repeated over and over by everyone else but it isn't true. Watch the clip below from "LSD: The Beyond Within". Even they repeat it. I guess they haven't seen the picture of Leary in the sixties on the bus with Neal Cassady!

I read in an article awhile back that they were trying to restore the bus, and that it had been rusting away on his son's farm in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. They mentioned his son, Zane Kesey. Maybe he'd be willing to talk to you?

You have #2!? I have number one and also this one:

I like reading about the time when Kesey took his group to Timothy Leary's mansion in upstate NY. It's in Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and also Storming Heaven: LSD and The American Dream goes into great detail about it.
Timothy Leary was in seclusion in the midst of a heavy multi-day acid binge when this crazy ass bus of freaks comes for a visit. Talk about two scenes clashing, even though both parties had one thing in common.
Such great history though. West coast met east, and neither knew what to make of the other.

Yeah, I have the Acid Test DVD also. It's great! One of my favorite parts is where you see Jerry Garcia sweeping up after the show looking all disoriented. I don't know why I love that so much but I do.

http://www.amazon.com/Further-Inquiry-Ken-Kesey/dp/0670831743
Sophomore year in high school, my English teacher gave us a list of books, we had to choose one and do a book report on it. I asked if I could do a report on a book not on the list, but by one of the authors on the list. I figured on doing "Sometimes a Great Notion" but when I went to the library, I found this book instead. Somehow I thought it would be a good idea to do a book report on this book instead. So there I am, in front of the whole class, showing them pictures(because the book is mostly pictures) out of a book that is about a bunch of tripped out hippies.
I didn't realize how cool the teacher was until years later, he didn't even bat an eye, and recommended I read the electric koolaid acid test.
Great book, wish I had a copy.
edit:The hardback was the most beautiful book I have ever seen. It even smelled good. Dunno about the paperback version.
