I salvaged what I could, but the lack of a sharp enough knife really fucked the rest of it up.

Finally... About time you caught him.

Now go buy some proper knives and catch the other one.
And don't forget about the pics. Show us the mess you made.

It's not so bad once it's dead.  It just feels like meat that needs to be cleaned.  It was a little different with him just staring me in the eye and chattering his teeth at me.  It's just a matter of a sharp knife and the right cuts.  A kitchen knife, even a ginsu, is nowhere near sharp enough.  I'm sitting there moving his guts around trying to find a good grip so I could pull but it just wasn't happening.  I hope to run into some rabbits.  That's next on my agenda next to doves.

my kitchen knives are sharp enough but they dont have a deep enough curve
to skin with, my hunting knives can do it all and throw out that ginsu and
the other dollar store knives as quick as you can

Yeah I will.  After the squirrel and the groundhog, my inner hunter is coming out and I'm really enjoying killing and eating my own food.  It's such a rewarding experience.  Not to mention the meat is less than 30 min old if done right there.

Pris, how does the curve of the knife affect it's skinning ability?

Newbie: how'd you do the deed with the groundhog? Did those destroyer pellets live up to the name? How heavy was that summa bitch?

ALSO! Pro tip for doves: get some dried corn kernels and sprinkle them in your yard. They love them. My mom puts corn out for the deers in the backyard but I see big ass flocks of doves eating the corn too. Do you have a Cabella's or BassPro near you? You might even be able to find the corn at Dick's.

Well I think the curve helps 'hug' the side of the pelt.  The straight knife doesnt give a good feel of the boundaries.

As for my technique, I tried to do it squirrel style...  The knife BARELY cut enough into it's tail for me to pull the skin off.  I found myself pushing the knife in so hard that by the time it actually got through it went right into the gut cavity and ruined any chance of skinning I had.  It pissed me off because Bruce wouldn't bring over his knife, Brad had collector knives he didn't wanna use, and his dad wouldn't lend me his, so I used what I had and it failed.

Don't worry, next time it'll be a different story.

Oh and it took about 3 destroyer pellets to do the job.  He squirmed for a while as I re-pumped and reloaded and popped more in.  I could tell he was just about brain dead after the first though because he slumped into the corner and kind of twitched.  If he had any sort of live in him he'd have been all over that cage.

a straight blade is more likely to take meat or cut the pelt, a short
curved blade gives a cleaner cut with more surface area contact, alittle
trick to skinning, the squirrel of instance, cur the skin around the
legs, a slit toward the belly down the inside of the legs, tie the feet
to something so it's hanging upside down, grab some skin and start
pulling it downward, when you get a lot of resistance, use the knife

there were several patches of millet planted for doves this year at my
place, they were bright green a few says ago, they're yellow now and
half the doves are dead after my neighbor shot them

biscuit stayed under my desk all weekend because of all the gunfire

Did your neighbor at least hook you up with some meat?

he always does, he makes venneson sausages like slim jims, summer
sausages, even bologna and hooks me up, last year he gave me enough
to fill one of my deep freezers and a good start on the second
