Bonsai tree
    #13048224 -

So i really want to grow one and i went out to buy a cheap starter kit, found one at Boarders for $30. I could use some guidance since this is my first time growing one plus the instructions are odd.

It tells me to soak seeds in water for 24 hours than place in a damp paper towel and refrigerate them for 7 days, does this sound right? The instructions also say that the seeds are Jack Pine, is that a good tree?

it sounds right, some seeds need different germination techniques, some require months of cold, some require boiling for a couple of minutes

jack pins are OK for bansai, juniper, birch and maple all are great for the art

Patients is the key to a good bonsai tree. Doing it from seed is a good way to train your patience. Try a root over rock bonsai, I think those look the coolest.

it you can, start about a dozen small trees at a time, you increase the chances of one surviving and you can make some interesting landscapes

if you start with birch, they usually require small groups, 3-5 trees minimum

Bonsai is so epic. I would love to get into it once I have a larger place and maybe a green house.

I want a Fairy Leaf/Hair Maple bonsai. There is one at my work for $100. It grows 1' every 10 years.

Pris, the birch bonsai landscapes are beautiful.

Fruit bonsais are fucking insane. Imagine a 18 inch fruit bearing tree that give you delicous food. Bonsai is truly an art.

I want to try an oak bonsai, I have an atleast 200 year old oak tree in my backyard, I've always thought about taking an acorn and making a bonsai from it. I can never seem to keep them alive past a few months though.

start with a sapling that's a couple of years old, dig it out in the
winter time while it's dormant, it'll take  the shock of it's first root
cutting a lot easier

I have about a thousand cedar trees I should do it with

i think we need a bonsai tek around these parts, someone should write up a real simple one maybe with a pic or two, and a simple outline of whats needed/required.  all i know is that you cut the roots to make it small, and you have to let them go dormant over the winter somehow:shrug:

i know there's prolly all kinds of guides on the net, but it would still be cool if someone wrote up a real simple one, then maybe sticky it in one of the forums or something

Dude, do NOT buy one of those starter kits. They are a HUGE rip off. Even the young "bonsai" they sell at big name garden places are rip offs.

What's done traditionally, is that you would hike to a mountainous region and find an already stunted specimen. You can find them in your area, just goto rocky places with trees. An abandoned quary in my area is a gold mine.

Alternatively, you would want to go buy a fairly large shrub or tree at a garden centre. HERE is a good link about selecting bonsai stock.

Traditionally, you wouldn't start from seeds.

Starting with good stock means that you can have a very nice looking bonsai very fast, and possibly an incredible bonsai within a decade maybe, instead of like 50 years starting from seed..
